Lawrence Weiner (born 1942) began his career as an artist in the early 1960s, traveling across the U.S., Mexico, Canada and eventually to Europe, furnishing himself with an ad hoc education on the way. He soon turned away from any conception of art as requiring a production of objects and focused instead on constructing new ways of perceiving language.
