A Great War is coming, and it will engulf the Imperium of Man. But what drives the Alpha Legion? Can they be trusted, and what side will they choose when the Heresy begins? Loyalties are put to the test, the cunning schemes of an alien intelligence are revealed, and the fate of mankind hangs in the balance.

What the fug do you think you’re doing? Guess who’s back? Returning champion Dan Abnett, not seen since book one (Horus Rising) triumphantly returns to helm book seven of the never disappointing (fingers crossed) Horus Heresy series. Not that I missed him overmuch, since his fellow writers were so adept and skillful in their own installments. Still, I’m excited as Abnett is the reason I started reading this series at all, after loving his Ravenor trilogy. Well, this entry is just as strong as any other, once again introducing a new group of Astartes for us to follow around, this time the Alpha Legion. I like these guys, they are kind of doing a “I am Spartacus” thing where it’s very hard to tell which one of these giant dudes is actually in charge. It lends a bit of mystery and even some comedy to these dark times, and they are exceedingly dark. The forces of evil from the warp are barely understood at this point and I love every detail that is teased out. I love this series, it’s grim, dark, violent, epic and full of cool words, names and turns of phrase I haven’t really encountered anywhere else. It’s like this universe has it’s own language, it feels different than anything else. I mean there is a guy with the last name Grammaticus. How cool is that? Sounds like a Transformer or something. Can’t wait for the next one. My only regret: I bought about ten of these things before they started coming out with the omnibus editions. Dang it! I like those better.

It is a nice "break" from the main storyline and introduces (or re-introduces, depending on how you look at things) additional "what-if" scenarios. A good read.

This book is thrilling. It's plot is convoluted to no end. Featuring the secretive Alpha Legion. This book features some of Dan Abnetts best work. The plot twists are incredible and you cannot see around the next bend. This book should be in any Warhammer 40K gamer's library.
