Das Monopol für Briefe unter 50 Gramm wird wie geplant zum 1. Januar 2008 abgeschafft. Damit wird die Liberalisierung des Postmarktes von der Großen Koalition nicht verschoben. Die Postmärkte anderer EU-Staaten werden hingegen erst im Jahr 2009 liberalisiert. Zurzeit hat die Deutsche Post in Deutschland im Bereich der Briefzustellung einen Marktanteil von 92 Prozent.
