Overview

Why would a man serving a long prison sentence escape the day before he's due to be released?

Audie Palmer has spent ten years in a Texas prison after pleading guilty to a robbery in which four people died and seven million dollars went missing. During that time he has suffered repeated beatings, stabbings and threats by inmates and guards, all desperate to answer the same question: where's the money?

On the day before Audie is due to be released, he suddenly vanishes. Now everybody is searching for him - the police, FBI, gangsters and other powerful figures - but Audie isn't running to save his own life. Instead, he's trying to save someone else's.

Michael Robotham has created the ultimate underdog hero, an honorable criminal shrouded in mystery and ready to lead readers on a remarkable chase.

"Life or Death is a nerve-shredding thriller with the heart and soul so often missing from lesser crime and suspense novels. I couldn't stop reading, yet I didn't want Audie's story to end. Robotham is an absolute master." - Stephen King. I figured if the master of storytelling himself liked this book, I had to give it a shot. King's praise nailed it, and so I will leave it at that.

It's been a bit of time since I've read a thriller - so many good Christmas books out there to indulge in - and this one has been languishing in my list for far, far too long. One of the most riveting novels I've read this year, and most definitely an author I'm going to be looking to for more thrills! Audie Palmer escapes from prison the day before his release date. That seems quite ridiculous to most people - me included - but is there someone out there who knows why? This is a slow release book, evenly paced throughout the story with enough revelations to keep the reader riveted. The tension is palpable and it makes for an intense, riveting read! Did I know where it was headed - NO. Did I suspect how it would play out - Absolutely NOT. Did I enjoy it? Oh, YES, each and every word. Loved, loved, loved everything about this one, and feel very appreciative for the author's skill in writing such a superbly structured story - one I won't forget for quite some time. I've already recommended it to my nearest and dearest - and he's so picky you'd hardly believe it! My thanks to Little, Brown Book Group for my copy via NetGalley. I chose to read this of my own free will - and I'm so sorry it took so long to reach the top of my list!

ARC provided in return for an unbiased review. "Why would a man serving a long prison sentence escape the day before he's due to be released?" Why indeed? The answer to this question is the crux of the novel, and it takes its time giving us the answer. We start with Audie Palmer's escape from prison and then through a series of flashbacks interspersed with current action, we gradually learn the story of what happened to Audie and why he makes his seemingly inexplicable escape. It's a long and winding road, but the story holds our interest and while the answer is tragic, the resolution is hopeful. The only real issue I had with the writing was the occasional use of "British-isms" in a story set in Texas and the American Southwest with nary a British character in sight. I enjoy Robotham's writing style and look forward to reading more of his work.

Great story, a compelling main character, and dialogue that jumps off the page You can actually see and hear the characters as their story unfolds thanks to the brilliant writing i am a big Elmore Leonard fan and i found the writing style very similar A great read.
