Readers often think of Job sitting on the ash heap, his life in shambles. But how did he get there? What was Job's life like before tragedy struck? What did he think as his world came crashing down around him? And what was life like after God restored his wealth, health, and family?

Through painstaking research and a writer's creative mind, Mesu Andrews weaves an emotional and stirring account of this well-known story told through the eyes of the women who loved him. Drawing together the account of Job with those of Esau's tribe and Jacob's daughter Dinah, Love Amid the Ashes breathes life, romance, and passion into the classic biblical story of suffering and steadfast faith.

I actually borrowed this ebook from my local library, and when I was not able to finish it within the lending period I had to purchase it, as there were 6 others ahead of me on the waiting list and I could wait no longer! Glad I own it now, as it has been chosen as my book club summer reading selection. Very well written and and also well researched. This got me looking into the book of Job further - you will not be disappointed.

Love Amid the Ashes is the debut novel of Mesu Andrews. From the beginning, it is obvious that Mesu has steeped herself in the study of the biblical text, and has done careful research in order to bring a fresh perspective on the sufferings of Job. At first, I wondered about a love story which takes place in the midst of Job's incredible pain and suffering. But Mesu has done justice to this story, parts of which are well-known, and others, little known. She has carefully woven together a story from details in the Bible, together with possible scenarios. Readers will be wanting to re-read the Book of Job as well as the relevant chapters from Genesis to see how the storyline flows. Love Amid the Ashes is a story for all time, as it deals with the ageless themes of forgiveness, shame, love and romance, family dynamics, and suffering. Faith shines brilliantly through words and actions. Characters come to learn of El Shaddai, and this knowledge deepens throughout the story. As the reader, I was caught up in the dilemmas of the characters, and felt their mounting tension. I found the hope-filled ending satisfying. Mesu adds the story of the hoopoe bird, now Israel's national bird, to tie the story line together. She also includes the relevant biblical text at the beginning of each chapter. Author's notes explain how the book came to be written. This is one of the first historical fiction books set in biblical times which I have read. I am very impressed with this debut novel, and look forward to what is yet to come from Mesu Andrews! ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Mesu Andrews is a speaker who has devoted herself to passionate and intense study of Scripture. Harnessing her deep understanding and love for God's Word. Great characters. Loved the descriptions, both of characters' emotions and the surroundings. The author did a good job of bringing the Biblical characters and her fictional characters together and, with good research, enhanced our appreciation of the story.

Loved every bit of this book!

If you know the story of Job from the Bible, this is a good read as to who the human culprits are behind the attacks. As for Dinah, a blue eyed blond in the Sinai desert?? Don't think so. Which of Jacobs wives or concubines was European? A red head like Esau would have been more acceptable. Other than this attempt at (what), I am enjoying the book.

Never thought I could enjoy biblical fiction but this story was great! It occupies the same literary space and universe as The Red Tent. Loved it!

I couldn't put this book down. I read it in two days.

Enjoyed this book though it apparently is not an entirely true biblical account. Once I was aware of this, I read it accepting it was far-fetched with some character connections and events.

For everyone going on that this has nothing to do with the's called fiction folks! They have used poetic license to write a story. It's the writer's story of "what if...".

One of my favorites

I became hooked on Biblical fiction when I read Roseanna White's A Stray Drop of Blood and Jill Eileen Smith's Wives of King David series. Both of those ladies are masterful with their skills and are at the top of my favorites list. Mesu Andrews sure ranks up there with those amazing ladies and their talent! Mesu Andrews took an account from the Old Testament and weaved it with life-like fiction and created a novel that is emotionally complex and, at many times, life changing. Though she has only written this debut, her passion for God and His words shine through as she already possesses the skill of a master writer. I was really excited to see that this was a story about Job. It was such a tragic account, yet you can feel God's love among the words and pages. Dinah's sweet character really pulled me into the midst of the tragedy as she found her love amid the ashes of Job's home. Her faith was strong and stood out, even when it seemed like things wouldn't be okay. I love that in a story like this. It helps to open my eyes and to remember that faith and God will get you through ANYTHING. Dinah and Job's story is one that will be with the reader long after it's put away. The message of heartache over come by faith, forgiveness and love like no other, flows strong and vivid across the pages. The words ring loud as they wrap the reader in an unforgettable emotional love story. I am putting this 5 star debut novel at the top of my recommendation list. It belongs up with Roseanna's tender work and Jill Eileen Smith's moving stories. If you love either of those ladies' work, then you are bond to love Mesu's! I am ecstatic that this is just the first of many emotional works of Biblical fiction from this amazingly talented author.

I recently stumbled into "Christian" fiction. I am totally hooked. They are so up lifting as well as heart opening. The only problem is . . . . I can NOT put them down. Thank you, Mesu Andrews; for your wonderful and touching story. Love amid the ashes has everything I look for in a good book and oh so much more. I am hoping by now you have written another wonderful story; if not, I will be impatiently waiting. Review by: Pamlsue

Love Amid the Ashes is a well-researched look into the life of Job. Mesu Andrews stays true to the story of Job using her meticulous research to write a story full of life, romance and passion. What was Job’s life like before he lost everything? How did Job’s wife react to the tragedy that struck her family? As with other books I’ve read of Mesu’s, she makes reading Biblical fiction fun introducing characters that add to the story. If you’ve read the book of Job and wondered how things might have been, I recommend reading Love Amid the Ashes! A definite must-read!
