Hosea has been charged by God with a difficult task--marry a prostitute in order to show God's people the nature and depth of his love for Israel. When Hosea goes to Israel to proclaim God's message, the prostitute God tells him to marry turns out to be his childhood friend Gomer. He finds her broken and abused, unwilling to trust Hosea or his God. But when marrying Hosea becomes her only choice, Gomer does what she's good at--she survives. Can Hosea's love for God and God's love for Israel heal Gomer's broken spirit?

With her potent combination of in-depth research and masterful storytelling, Mesu Andrews brings to life a complex and fascinating biblical story of the power of love and forgiveness in the face of utter betrayal.

Beautifully researched history, evocative scenery, genuine questions and dilemmas, plus a haunting depiction of God’s interaction with real people, all work together to make Mesu Andrews Love in a Broken Vessel a classic in the vein of Lloyd Douglas’ The Robe, Lew Wallace’s Ben Hur, Rosemary Sutcliffe or Taylor Caldwell. The warring worlds of Judah and Israel come to vivid life. Political threats and alliances, military schemes, business and betrayal form a convincing background to the tale of one loving man and the girl he fell for back when they were children. But Hosea has left his native Israel and grown up under the tutelage of Amos and Jonah. He's a prophet allied with the half-royal Isaiah and eager young Micah. Meanwhile Gomer has been sold into harlotry. She’s good, very good at what she does, but she’s learned to trust no-one. Nobody stays. Nobody means what they say, except when it’s bad. Sadly much of what God has to say may seem bad, even as coincidence or guidance bring the childhood friends back together. Why would a good God make a good king sick? How can a forgiving God declare he’ll never forgive Israel's harlotry? And how, after laying claim to unforgiving anger, can God then turn around expecting thanks for the gift of healing? Does the harlot symbolize all that God despises, or perhaps all he seeks to redeem? And how can Hosea’s love be trusted if his first loyalty is to God? Author Mesu Andrews reminds her characters that God speaks in different ways, while giving her readers pleasing insights into how God’s voice might be heard. In the gentle wind, in the dream, in fire, in love, God finds a way, and this story reveals how love can both heal and be healed, how forgiveness is never impossible, and how God’s kindness might win through. Beautifully blending Biblical references, well-researched history and well-told imagination, Love in a Broken Vessel is deeply human and genuinely enthralling. I shall definitely lend this one to my Mum when next she visits, and I'll look forward to reading more by this author. Disclosure: I met the author and bought her book, then she signed it. Lucky me!

I really enjoy reading biblical fiction.  While there is no better source than the Bible itself, reading biblical fiction allows me to retain the story and the message that God was trying to give in an easier fashion.  Love in a Broken Vessel is based off the book of Hosea and helps explain why God had wanted Hosea to marry Gomer.  Gomer was representing Israel and the fact that Israel had turned away from God.  Gomer was a childhood friend of Hosea, but when he shows up, she turns her back on him and doesn't want to have anything to do with him.  Having no other choice, she relents and marries him, only to go back to her old ways.  Hosea shows enormous faith and character in taking her back again.  In much the same way that God was faithful to Israel, even though they turned away from Him - and as we struggle in our day to day walk with God, and may turn away, He is forever faithful to us as well.  It is a beautiful love story and the author does a great job in bringing the characters to life.  It was easy to become immersed in the story and to feel the pain and betrayal, as well as the forgiveness and love that both Hosea and Gomer felt.  This is the third book in the series, New Treasures of Love from Old Testament Tales, and I am looking forward to reading the first two that I missed!

Mesu Andrews in her new book, "Love In A Broken Vessel" Book Three in the Treasures of His Love series published by Revell gives us a fictional account of the Prophet, Hosea and his marriage to Gomer. From the Back Cover: An epic journey of intimacy, rejection, betrayal . . . and hope God gives Hosea a difficult command-marry a prostitute in order to show God's people the nature and depth of His love for Israel. When Hosea goes to Israel to proclaim the Lord's message, the woman God directs him to marry turns out to be his childhood friend Gomer. He finds her broken and abused, unwilling to trust Hosea or his God. But when marrying Hosea becomes her only means of escape, Gomer does what she's good at-she survives. Can Hosea's love for God and God's love for Israel restore Gomer's broken spirit? With her powerful combination of in-depth research and masterful storytelling, Mesu Andrews brings to life one of the most complex and fascinating stories of love and forgiveness in the face of utter betrayal. Mesu Andrews has once again written a wonderful, fictionalized version of a book of the Bible-this time it is the Prophet, Hosea. Hosea had a message to deliver to the people from God, obviously, that is what made him a prophet. But the real message that he brought to all people who read the book is found played out in his marriage to Gomer. Gomer is one unfaithful woman and Hosea keeps taking her back time after time. I must say if it had been me I would have walked away from her which is probably the reason why God didn't choose me for this particular task. The marriage between Hosea and Gomer is a reflection of the marriage between God and mankind. We are unfaithful but God is faithful and He keeps taking us back time after time. In "Love In A Broken Vessel" Ms. Andrews has done a superb account of researching many different sources to give us a cast of characters that most of us are probably not aware of. Ms. Andrews gives us the Biblical portrayal of the man, Hosea, in a new way. There is quite a lot of detail that Ms. Andrews provides us that is not the Biblical account but is still historically accurate. I believe that this book should be read, not only for the Biblical detail, but for the extra story that brings new life to the man we know as Hosea. Well done. LOVE IN A BROKEN VESSEL by Mesu Andrews is a compelling Christian Historical Romance(Biblical Characters). #3 in “Treasures of His Love” series, but can be read as a stand alone. What a compelling tale of love, forgiveness, healing, adultery, betrayal, rejection, hope, faith and the power of God’s love. Can a prostitute and a Prophet truly find love? Hosea is commanded by God to marry a prostitute, his childhood friend,Gomer,to show Israel God’s love. She brings Biblical characters to live on each page. The characters become real as you have never seen them before. I love how she brings each character to life and into their own. A beautiful blending of vivid historical research and contemporary love. If you want the biblical story of Hosea and Gomer you can find it in the book of Hosea in the Old Testament. Mesu Andrews has taken this book of the bible, the story of how God loved the country of Israel so much, yet she prostituted herself to false idols. God has Hosea marry Gomer, a prostitute to be a physical model for Israel of what they were doing to God. The author is able to show both of these relationships eloquently in this novel. It is rich in history, with I suspect a lot of research into biblical history, and the relevance of the times. The history however does not bog down the story, but gives it flow. The author in sharing the story of Hosea and Gomer has taken poetic license to share more of their life, as if we are watching it unfold before us. I felt she did an excellent job in adding to the story, without changing the biblical meaning. A fantastic message that still reigns true to day in our world for so many. God the creator loves us, yet we continue to turn from him.

Yay! A new favorite Biblical fiction author for me to enjoy! She’s right up there with Tessa Afshar and Jill Eileen Smith. This mesmerizing book is based on the story of the Old Testament prophet Hosea, who, as you may remember, was commanded by God to marry a harlot to illustrate Israel’s relationship with God. Of course, Mesu had to include quite a bit of fiction to flesh out this book (based on a book of prophecy), but it all seemed accurate and was very well done. I was especially impressed by how many direct quotes there were from the Bible and specifically the book of Hosea. All worked neatly into the story! This book naturally deals with some tough material, but Mesu handled it very tastefully and without over much detail – though this still isn’t a book for younger readers. That being said, it was an intriguing book and you won’t be able to put it down! Do you like Biblical fiction? If so, definitely recommending this author and this book. Available March 2013 at your favorite bookseller from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group. **Revell sent me a free copy of this book in return for my honest review. This is the first book I have read by Mesu Andrews, but it won't be the last. Even the title has so much meaning, and it will be clear to you once you finish this book. How could anyone sell their child, and into prostitution. What a hard life Gomer has had, but even with all of her sins God was looking out for her. Hosea, God's Profit, receives a message from God to marry a prostitute. Gomer is there, and she is an old childhood friend...indeed they have been on different paths. This book is reading a living feel like you are in the tents, markets, and even at the bloody battle scenes. Once you start this book, you won't be able to put it down, and it will move your spirit. Your heart will cry out for these people, and yet they have brought all on themselves with their worshiping of idols. Paganism is rampant, and their is so much evil. Satan has taken a hold, Israel has always God's chosen people, but they were turning their backs on him. A very different read from my usual, but one that will be lingering with me for a long time. I received this book through Revell Publisher's Bloggers Tours, and was not required to give a positive review.

This is my favorite Mesu Andrews book yet! It really gets deep into the feelings and lives of Hosea and Gomer. Sure, she may have taken some author's liberty to create different scenes, but she keeps it all Biblically accurate. She does so by doing extensive research into the Bible, timelines, genealogies, and commentaries based on the people's time period and cultures. I can't wait for her new release "Of Fire and Lions"; I know she will not disappoint.

The back cover of Love in a Broken Vessel describes this story as an epic journey of intimacy, rejection, betrayal and Hope and that describes this novel perfectly. If you are a fan of Biblical fiction, you will not be disappointed. Mesu Andrews is a master at weaving a story using scripture from books of the Bible, in this case, the book of Hosea. She skillfully researches scripture including research on how the people lived, dressed, what they ate, where they lived, how women were treated, and this just adds to her storytelling . She also includes a family tree to help you understand the familial relationships. Your heart will break for Gomer as she repeatedly feels abandoned and goes back to the only way of life that makes her feel in control. Will she find love in the end and how does God finally get her attention? You may have read the book of Hosea in the Bible but Love in a Broken Vessel brings this story of restoration to life. A definite must-read!

If you are looking for books for your summer reading list put this one at the top. Mesu Andrews has brought the book of Hosea to life! The depth of Andrew's research pays off in rich descriptions of customs, places, and daily life that makes for an enjoyable biblical fiction novel. Be transported back to the ancient times when Gods kingdom was divided into Israel and Judah. Through his prophet, Hosea, Yahweh demonstrated his love for a people lost in idolatry. This hit home for me because I have been guilty of misaligned priorities, of being too busy for God, and of wasting time in frivolous activities instead of seeking His will. Andrews does a superb job of weaving fictional dialog with biblical truth which put this period of history into focus for me. It's a thought provoking book. It got me thinking about how God's plans stretch into eternity and how they are much greater than our momentary struggles. It reminded me of how God extends his boundless grace to me (a sinner) and of how He pursues us. Best of all it challenges me to love deeply those who feel abandoned, unloveable, or forgotten. We are commanded to love one another and it's only by our obedience to Him that hurting and hardened hearts can hear the message of salvation. Although it is easy to read I encourage you not to rush. This book needs to be savored and perhaps even enjoyed as a group/book club because it would spark great discussion. Highly recommend!

Love in a Broken Vessel by Mesu Andrews is a fascinating look at the biblical characters Hosea and Gomer that bring to life the power of God’s love for Israel. I started this book and couldn’t put it down! Andrews takes you on a journey to ancient Jerusalem where you’ll be immersed in the customs, rituals and culture of the time. She breathes life into Hosea and Gomer as they practically walk off the pages begging you to follow them into their life. This is a beautiful redemptive tale of one man’s obedience to God even when his wife continues to reject his love by returning to her old ways. Hosea’s patience and obedience convict me! This beautiful story of redemptive love will give you a tiny glimpse of God’s love toward us! I received a free copy of this book from Revell Books for my honest review. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Not a story to be read quickly, 'Love in a Broken Vessel' is an intricately researched, masterful retelling of the Old Testament story of the prophet Hosea and the woman Yahweh told him to marry. If you don't know the story, you may imagine he was led to a godly woman, perhaps even the devout daughter of another prophet. But she was a prostitute. Unbelievable, that Yahweh would direct a faithful prophet to a faithless mate. But that's exactly what He did--to illustrate the way He loved Israel, His faithless people. In an impressive combination of research, craftsmanship, and good old-fashioned storytelling, Andrews unfolds this tale of unconditional love, forgiveness, and redemption from the eyes of both Hosea and Gomer. Experience Hosea hearing the voice of God. Experience Gomer's feelings of abandonment and determination to survive. Understand her bitterness. Ache for the children she left behind. But this is not just a story of betrayal and heartbreak, it is a story of redemption and hope. As Gomer says, "If Yahweh can take a life as broken as mine and restore it, perhaps there's a way to redeem other broken vessels." Those interested in Old Testament history or ancient cultures, will find this book to be accurate and well researched, although logically imaginative. It may drive you back to the book of Hosea, as it did me, to check out some of its premises. But it's not only a book for history buffs, it's a great story and an engrossing historical novel. Highly recommended.
