Overview

Like night and day with its predecessor, Jackson Wang's sequel album, MAGICMAN 2, takes a sharp turn into more contemplative and hazy territory, eschewing the bombast, frustration, and cathartic release of MAGICMAN in favor of introspection and atmosphere. His third full-length, this set is dreamy, vulnerable, and even wounded, with the more energized tracks ("Access," "BUCK" with Diljit Dosanjh) still more chill and groovy in comparison to anything on MAGICMAN. It's a nice change of pace, allowing Wang's singing voice to shine on tracks like "Everything" and "Made Me a Man." Paired together, the full MAGICMAN experience highlights Wang's ability to mold his voice to multiple genres, whether it's thrilling on a rock and funk track, or soothing and moody like on these reflective MAGICMAN 2 offerings. ~ Neil Z.
