Overview

Malevolent (Shaye Archer Series #1) by Jana DeLeon

From New York Times bestselling author Jana DeLeon, the first in a new thriller series.

Everyone wondered about Shaye Archer's past. Including Shaye.

Shaye Archer's life effectively began the night police found her in an alley, beaten and abused and with no memory of the previous fifteen years, not even her name. Nine years later, she's a licensed private investigator, with a single goal-to get answers for her clients when there aren't supposed to be any.

And maybe someday, answers for herself.

Emma Frederick thought her nightmare was over when she killed her abusive husband, but someone is stalking her and tormenting her with mementos from her past. With no evidence to support her claims, the police dismiss her claims as post-traumatic stress, but Shaye is convinced that someone is deliberately terrorizing Emma...playing a cat and mouse game with only one goal in mind.

To kill Emma.

I love 2 series of books by this author: the "Ghost-In-Law" series and the "Miss Fortune" series. I gave both series 5 Stars. So, I decided to give this book a try. It's not very good. It does have an interesting premise. And, it starts off okay, but it starts to fall apart about 2/3 into it. Up to about this point, it feels like the author is in control of the story. Then, it's like a switch is flipped and every weird plot twist you can imagine is tossed into the mix willy nilly. It feels like the author is fighting to regain her focus and control of the story. Remember, when you were a kid, and you mixed colors together while you were painting or coloring? You'd mix some together, and they looked great. Then, you'd add that one color too many and you'd wind up with some barf-like greenish or brownish mess. This book is barf-like greenish/brownish. Also, one previous reviewer is correct. The main character is a, nearly, carbon copy of the "Eve Dallas" character by J.D. Robb.

Starts strong then turns into a tedious series of repetitive conversations related in stilted dialog. People don't talk like this. I gave up half way thru. Didn't care about the characters and found the plot convoluted.

Love the quick pace of the storyline. Great female characters. A bit wordy trying to tie up all the loose ends at the conclusion. Great first book of this type, want to see how the lead character develops in next book.

This story kept me in suspense from the very beginning. The writer really knew how to keep the reader guessing. I had several hours of nail bitting reading and I would encourage anyone who enjoys a good mystery to read this book.

This is a good read. The characters work well together. Just when you think they are on the right path, here comes another twist. The ending took me totally by surprise. I highly recommend.

Enjoyed this one trying to get ahead and stay there was difficult. Thrilling who done it and the why is even harder to come up with.

The book held my attention till the last 50 to 70 pages. The end seemed rushed and not as well developed as the beginning and middle. So many false leads. Maybe they play a role in Shays life, which I guess will be addressed in a later book.

Nothing about the characters or plot was remotely believeable. No amount of money or love or thearapy will ever heal an abuse victim to the degree postulated in this absurd novel. No character, hero or villian was remotely real. Comic. Book

Amazing....I have read most of Jana DeLeon's books and have enjoyed them. Some a little silly and some downright laugh out loud. Great cozy mysteries. However, there is nothing cozy about this series. I could not put it down. Very intense, beautifully written and I would recommend this series to anyone. Well Done!

Does the basic premise seem to anybody else to suggest Eve Dallas from JD Robb's books?

A lot darker than I would normally read but still a good book. Will probably order Sinister but not for a few weeks. Need to read something funny first. I still really like Jana DeLong ' s writing. Great author.
