Malice (Faithful and the Fallen Series #1) by John Gwynne

The world is broken...

Corban wants nothing more than to be a warrior under King Brenin's rule - to protect and serve. But that day will come all too soon. And the price he pays will be in blood.

Evnis has sacrificed - too much it seems. But what he wants - the power to rule — will soon be in his grasp. And nothing will stop him once he has started on his path.

Veradis is the newest member of the warband for the High Prince, Nathair. He is one of the most skilled swordsman to come out of his homeland, yet he is always under the shadow of his older brother.

has ideas - and a lot of plans. Many of them don't involve his father, the High King Aquilus. Nor does he agree with his father's idea to summon his fellow kings to council.

The Banished Lands has a violent past where armies of men and giants clashed in battle, but now giants are seen, the stones weep blood and giant wyrms are stirring. Those who can still read the signs see a threat far greater than the ancient wars. For if the Black Sun gains ascendancy, mankind's hopes and dreams will fall to dust...

...and it can never be made whole again.

MALICE is a dark epic fantasy tale of blind greed, ambition, and betrayal.

I loved this book. There are ALOT of characters, but I think he did a great job in refreshing your memory of each per their chapter. I can not wait for the next book!

Some good writing. Interesting premise to begin with. But there are jusst too many characters and storylines, told in very short alternating chapters. Hard to keep track of them all and by halfway through I was so confused I finally lost interest altogether

I have nothing bad to say about this book. It was fine.  I have seen it compared to A Song of Song and Fire which isn't fair. Malice is a good fantasy book that is worth your read if you're a fan of the genre, but it isn't Game of Thrones. I don't want to sound negative because Malice is a fine read.  I just want to provide potential readers with realistic expectations. This was a good book, but not an awesome 5-star book on the level of Dune or A Song of Ice and Fire.

Malice is a great start to the Faithful and the Fallen, which I'm sure will be a fantastic series. I have already read the first two books in the last week and a half and I just can't get enough of them. Gwynne does an excellent job of creating realistic, relatable, and meaningful characters who grow organically throughout the series. The reader is introduced smoothly into this tale of the Banished Lands, without a large amount of lore to slog through in order to make sense of the world he has crafted. Death and destruction are certainly an integral part of the story, but are meted out thoughtfully, not gratuitously. It might be a cliche, but this is a must read for anyone with even a remote interest in the sword and sorcery fantasy genre.

There are a lot of characters but he gives them such depth that by the end you couldn't think of not having one of them.
