Masks

In Brinegate, an oath was made before witnesses. A person showed their living face, spoke what they would hold, and put on a carved mask. If they broke that promise, the town had seen enough to call them to account.

The man guarding Brinegate's harbor chain swore he would hold it until morning. Rowan was a child when the bells failed to ring and the chain came down. Fire took the town. Rowan escaped with the guard's broken mask and the memory of what had been promised.
