I am a great fan of well written mystery thrillers. I especially enjoyed Perry's 'Jane Whitefield Series' but 'Metzger's Dog'- a mystery thriller for sure-is highly entertaining and pure fun to read. The CIA assumes they are dealing with some dangerous terrorists and based on that erroneous assumption almost start an international incident. I am sure you will enjoy intelligent devious 'Chinese Gordon', his friends and beautiful girlfriend and of course Dr.Henry Metzger and the fearful junkyard dog. This book will put you in a good mood! Be sure to read Carl Hiasson's introduction.

I read some of Perry's other novels a few years ago (the Jane Whitefield series) which I enjoyed. Then I read "Island", a terrific satire (which it took me 20+ disappointing pages to realize). And then I found a reissued "Butcher's Boy", his Edgar Award winning first novel, which was excellent Metzger's Dog may be the best combination of several different types of novels from a very gifted (although somewhat unusual) author. So where necessary, suspend your disbelief and enjoy!

I love crime fiction. I got hooked on John D. MacDonald as a teen. Now I burn through Michael Connelly, Dennis Lehane and others. But there's a special place in my heart for crime fiction that makes me laugh. Metzger's Dog deserves a place on the shelf right next to your favorite Elmore Leonard and Carl Hiaasen titles. I didn't just read this book, I devoured it. The only problem was, half an hour after I finished with "Chinese"... I was hungry for more.

What's not to love? Metzger's Dog has so many selling points it's hard to define it, but I'll try. Chinese Gordon is a great antihero. The CIA is comprised of 90% absolute idiots. It has horrible animals you can't help but love. There is a great combination of suspense, humor and romance which makes it hard to predict. Essentially, it has everything a reader could ask for.Overall, it is one of my favorite books, if not my absolute favorite.

It was okay. I wouldn't read it again. And I wouldn't pick up any more books by this author on the basis of this one. But I wouldn't turn away from another book from Perry just because of this either. The plot is complicated... and told from a chopped up perspective... and sorta political in nature... and there's no butt kicking or sex in it so I don't even know why it was on my reading list.Oh well... it was a change of pace, but... I'm done with that pace for now. Back to the good stuff.

Without question one of my favorite fiction books of all time. Chinese Gordon and his pals should have a series of their own. Of course, he shows up very briefly in "Island", but we want more.

Wonderful story with colorful characters. A cat with his own dog! Hysterical.

One of the best reads ever (and I read all the time). I miss the original cover, though, which featured a cat with his tail draped over a gun barrel. Metzger is the cat's name.
