THE FIRST PAWS & CLAWS MYSTERY FROM KRISTA DAVIS—A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!

The Sugar Maple Inn in Wagtail, Virginia, is the country's premiere vacation hot spot for pet owners who can’t bear to leave their furry friends behind. But this tourist town smells trouble when a killer goes on the prowl...

Holly Miller's life has gone to the dogs. She has no job, her boyfriend's former flame is sniffing around, and a scruffy but loveable Jack Russell Terrier is scattering crumbs all over her borrowed car. Just when she thought things couldn't get worse, a troubling phone call about her grandmother sends her rushing home to the family inn on Wagtail Mountain.

The staff—and a frisky Calico kitten named Twinkletoes—adopts Holly and her new dog on arrival.  But someone in this friendly town is bad to the bone. One of the employees at the inn has been killed in a hit-and-run accident—which is looking anything but accidental. Now Holly and her furry companions will have to nose out the murderer before someone else gets muzzled.

Delicious recipes for owners and pets included!

a solid start to a new cozy mystery Would you like to take a trip, but worry about leaving your animals behind? Fear no more, you can go to Wagtail, Virginia, a town that caters to travelers who bring their pets along. Stay at the Sugar Maple Inn and you'll enjoy comfortable lodgings and your dogs and cats will eat as well as you; animal friendly versions of the gourmet people food in most cases! You can visit numerous shops devoted to treats and supplies for your furry friends, consult a pet psychic, even stop at Heal! Drugs and Sundry to get an ice cream cone for yourself as well as a frosty treat for your furry pal as well. You can't make it to Virginia? That's OK-you can get there via your favorite bookstore or library. Just pick up Murder, She Barked by Krista Davis, the first of the Paws and Claws Mystery series. After a troubling phone call Holly Miller rushes to her grandmother's side in Wagtail, Virginia. She soon discovers the town she visited as a youth has changed. It's now a premier vacation spot for people traveling with pets! Unfortunately, the town is not tranquil. An employee at her grandma's inn has been murdered and Holly herself sees a car go up in flames. A guest is assaulted and then another murder occurs. There are also some nasty and unpleasant people in this town-one already I wouldn't mind seeing murdered! Murder, She Barked is a fun trip to an animal loving town. Holly Miller is a likable protagonist, but to me, the stars of the story are Trixie and Twinkletoes. They bring out the best in Holly and further the story as well. I can't wait to see what mischief the lovable dog and curious kitten get into next! There's a solid mystery here and a good crew of supporting characters. Oma is a lovable force to be reckoned with, full of mischief and manipulation...but with only the best intentions. I'm pleased to say that recipes for both people and pets are included. Murder, She Barked is a solid start to a new cozy mystery that animal lovers in particular will enjoy!

Cozy mysteries resident Domestic Diva, Krista Davis is going in a new direction with the first book in her new Paws and Claws Mystery series, Murder She Barked. Wagstail, Virginia is a very special town, dedicated to pets and their persons. Davis does a fantastic job of making this little town a place that pet owners and their pets will love. From restaurants that allow pets, and even give them their own menu's to activities designed just for cats and dogs, there seems to be a lot going on, including murder! I was really delighted to see where Krista Davis would take readers with her new series. Considering that I am an animal lover as well, this series was right up my ally. Can you imagine a town that caters to animals in every way possible? That's Wagstail. What a great setting. Davis makes readers believe that a place like Wagstail and The Sugar Maple Inn could really exist and I'm sure most of us wish it did after reading this book.  Twinkletoes and Trixie were the stars of the show in this book. I know that my little dog can get into some pretty good messes, but these two take the cake. They really added a lot of humor and comedy to the novel. What amateur sleuth wouldn't want this pair helping them figure out the clues? I thought Davis did a great job with them and then I read that they were patterned after her own dog and cat. I can totally see that, they are so realistic, but over-the-top as well. I loved these two and can't wait to see what they get into next. I think that Davis balanced her love of animals well with her love of baking and cooking in this book and the recipes at the end of the book are an added bonus. Pet lovers and mystery readers a like will all find something they like in this first book. Davis sets up the background for the town and it's eccentric shop owners quickly and doesn't rely to heavily on that part of the story to carry the book. The mystery may be the main focus of the novel, but the little details are what sets this one apart. The mystery aspect of the book was very cleverly done. Who would want to kill one of the Sugar Maple Inn's employee's? What's really going on around there? I thought Holly was a great lead character and I liked the way her mind worked as she figured out each clue and found the killer. I figured this one out shortly before the big reveal. There were plenty of suspects and motives, but Davis was quick to keep the reader off balance and grasping for their own clues. A great first book in a series, that I think will take the cozy sub-genre by storm. I loved it and think I like the way Davis thinks. There should be a lot more fun to come from the Sugar Maple Inn as we get to know Holly and furry friends.

Holly Miller’s life has gone to the dogs. She has no job and her boyfriend’s old girlfriend wants him back and since she is his boss’s daughter she is always around. Then she gets a phone call to return home to Wagtail from her grandmother’s friend saying her grandmother needs her. She wastes no time, hops into her boyfriend’s car, tells him she will call when she knows more and heads to Virginia. She makes a quick stop for gas before heading up the mountain and picks up a “hitchhiker” – A Jack Russell Terrier who has been left behind by someone makes himself right at home in the car. When they reach Wagtail both are welcomed with open arms. Her grandmother seems fine but Holly decides to stick around. It’s been a long time since they have spent time together and she thinks her grandmother is keeping something from her. Then she learns there was a hit and run accident and one of the Inn’s employees was killed. Holly thinks it may not have been so much of an accident. She is like a dog with a bone as she and her furry friends do their best to sniff out the killer. Dollycas’s Thoughts What a wonderful idea for a cozy mystery series – Paws & Claws!! Wagtail sounds like an animal lover’s paradise. Imagine a town dedicated to pets and their humans. Because you know we don’t own out pets, they are part of our family and they each have their own person/s. My husband is definitely our 2 dogs person. They tolerate being left here with me while he is at work but when he gets home I no longer exist unless they want to lick my ice cream bowl. The Jack Russell and a cute little calico kitten have both chosen Holly as their person. Krista Davis has created a wonderful setting in Wagtail. There is no way to describe this idyllic place in this review, you will just have to read the book. I would love to live there 365 days a year. She has also given us a wonderful group of characters both 2 legged and 4 legged. Unique, colorful and real and they span all ages. Add to that a well-plotted mystery that keeps us guessing to the finish. If I had a tail it would be wagging in pure delight. I loved this story!! A fantastic series debut!! I cannot wait for my visit to The Sugar Maple Inn.

Murder, She Barked is the first in the A Paws and Claws Mystery series. For us pet lovers, hopefully, we will see some of the changes that the fictional town of Wagtail made regarding where one is able to take their pets. Holly Miller has to leave dinner with her boyfriend and his boss and head to Wagtail as their is an emergency with her grandmother, Oma. On her way she finds a terrier stranded in the pouring down rain and rescues him. As they near Sugar Maple Inn, Holly narrowly misses a man standing in the middle of for shrouded road, then hears a couple explosions and sees a fire begin in the ravine below. Upon arriving at the inn she finds that Oma appears well, except for a sprained ankle. Holly soon finds that the inn and the entire town is a pet friendly one. But she also finds out that Sven, an employee of the inn has been killed in a hit and run accident and very possibly Oma may have been the intended victim. When the mayor is killed in his home, it is time to really time looking for the killer and if the two maybe related. The culprit needs to be found before the reputation of Wagtail is also killed. This book has a wonderful cast of characters that I hope will be back. Oma loves her granddaughter, but still, I think, she is keeping some things to herself and with her best friend Rose, will probably want to play matchmaker. The readers will enjoy most of the shop keepers, some have a have "an axe to grind" with Oma and Holly, but all the the same they are interesting and their reasons are explained. Besides they can't be all bad if they allow pets in their shops.

If you are a pet lover, this book is definitely for you.  Even the Inn at Wagtail, Virginia caters to pet lovers and their pets, with special menus for every cat and dog at every meal.  The rooms are set up with play areas for the pets and the Inn has it's own on sight house cat named Twinkletoes. All the businesses in the town welcome pets, and most pets can expect loving from everyone around them. Then there is Holly Miller, the innkeeper Oma's granddaughter.  She's just lost her job, so when she's called by a friend of Oma telling her to immediately rush to the Inn because her Oma needs her right now, she borrows her boyfriend's car and leaves without even a change of clothes. Before she actually reaches the Inn, she's acquired a scruffy stray terrier dog, and sees a car go up in flames.  Things don't get much better at the Inn because her boyfriend shows up with his old girlfriend, and there are more dead bodies.  What's a girl to do?  Trixie the terrier, who has decided to adopt Holly, has plenty of ideas of his own. This is truly a pet lover's delight.  Trixie drives much of the plot and Twinkletoes helps in her own strange ways.  I fell in love with Holly and her Oma immediately, and I wanted this fictional town to be real. The mystery was definitely strange and kept me interested from clue to clue.  This book is the start of the Paws and Claws mystery series, which I hope goes on and on forever!

What did I think of the book: I thought this was a fun start to a new series. I loved Wagtail and think it would be a great place to visit on vacation if not to move to. It was so cute how the whole town was geared towards dogs and cats. I felt bad for Holly and was hoping some things would change for her in the end. Of course you could not help but love Olma. Zelda and Casey were two other characters that I really liked. I am hoping to see more of Zelda and Holmes in the future books. Twinkletoes is a very interesting cat and I liked how she attached herself to Holly oh and we can't forget about Trixie. I am so glad she found a forever home with Holly. I am looking forward to continuing with this series. What I thought of the cover: I think this book has a cute cover. To start with I liked the pink color that was used. Then you have the inviting front porch of the inn. And what is not to love about the picture of Trixie and Twinkletoes. A very inviting cover to me.

This book was such a great story after reading all the Domestic Diva's and loving them I was so happy when Ms. Davis introduced us to Paws & Claws Series.  The ability to weave a story heavily ladened with animals of all kinds made it that much more enjoyable. This book follows Sugar Maple Inn and the residents there when Holly Miller goes home to her grandmother and finds some weird stuff going on such as death and all it's up to Holly and her pets Twinkletoes and Trixie to find out what is going on and who is committing murder. While Holly is there she realizes that her love life is a mess that her boyfriend Ben isn't what she needs it's all ok, no fireworks or butterfly syndrome.  Holly makes some tough decisions about her life and the direction it's headed in.  Whether to go back to her boring job or stay at Wagtail and work with her grandmother at the inn. I just loved the animals along with the mystery and adventure and seeing Holly make these tough decisions she needed to make in life.  I really felt like I was there with everyone in Wagtail and loved every minute of it!

This book was a surprisingly nice addition to my library. I enjoyed every minute of this clever plot. A good mystery with suspects that made sense but . . . were wrong. Gladly the dog did not talk like a person but was a handy and sweet addition to the storyline. When will another be available? Is there one and I missed it? I'll buy it. I'll even preorder it.

What a fun read and an enjoyable book. I am very interested in reading another book from the series. I would love to live in a place that DOGS are welcomed no matter where you go. This book proves that dogs are smarter then people! But then dog lovers already knew that.
