About the Author

I've always loved to write, but after my first attempt at a novel (nine chapters of Plastic City, the story of underwater-dwelling orphans in the twenty-third century that I wrotein the sixth grade), I took some time to get my bachelor'sdegree and to try my hand at other careers before I returnedto my first passion: creative writing. After lots and lots of perseverance, hard work, and a bit of very good luck, My Darling Caroline went on to win the Romance Writers of America's RITA® Award for Best First Book of 1998.

I live in Texas with my family, exploring history as Idelve into the hearts of my characters.

Brilliant botanist Caroline Grayson desperately wants to attend oxford, but her gender rejects her. She tries to sneakily gain admittance at a school in New York hiding that she is a female, but though accepted her father intercedes. He has arranged a marriage for her with brooding veteran Brent Ravenscroft. She gets a husband she does not want; he gets his horses and estate back, bought by her father while Brent was fighting Napoleon; and her father rids himself of his fourth daughter. Forced to marry, Caroline hopes to annul the nuptials and flee to America. Brent would relish seeing her leave, but fears he would lose what he received if he can not accept the genius as his wife. Neither anticipated falling in love. This is a reprint of a RITA award winning Best First Book that entertains the audience the moment the botanist and the veteran reluctantly agree to a marriage of convenience. The concept of not taking care of the affairs, in this case property, of the soldier at war has a modern context as the military tries to accommodate the deployed solider. Caroline also feels somewhat like a modern woman with her desire to attend higher learning in science; unheard of for the Ton. Fans will enjoy Adele Ashworth's take on the marriage of convenience as the lead couple is the reason she won the RITA. Harriet Klausner

This book definitely goes on my favorites list. This is the first book that I read by this author. I love her unique characters and how she builds romantic tension. I have read all of her other books since then, but this one is the absolute best.

The story focuses on the emotional aspect of the characters. I enjoyed this book because of the little scenes where the two would spend time just talking... whether it was late at night in front of the fire sipping brandy or while they lay in bed simply communicating after passionate love-making. Moments like that allow you to really see the love brewing. This book doesn't pay much attention to a thrill, danger, or any other complication other than the trials that develop between man and woman.

This book will go on my favorites list. I loved the vulnerability of both characters and the dialogue was really smart. Too. The characters were relatable and immensely likeable.

As people say about a good book "this one is a keeper" except in my opinion: "this is a romantic feast."
