Talented debut author Heather McLaren spins a fascinating web that combines humans, the mer people, and the lost city of Atlantis. David and Faren are warm, sympathetic protagonists, and their forbidden love story is sweet, tragic, and compelling.

Find this review and more at Lusty Penguin Reviews! Debut author Heather McLaren thoroughly entertains in the first book in the Mer Chronicles, Mythos, a young adult paranormal fantasy romance filled with betrayal, forgiveness, and love. McLaren builds her unique world where humans, sea demons, and the mer are the norm. Faren Sands, a mer, knows she has found her soul mate upon seeing David Cooley, a human. Unfortunately for Faren, it is against their laws to be in contact with humans. Strong, intelligent, and fiercely independent, Faren is a character you can’t help but love because she is willing to risk everything to be with David. Furthermore, she is determined to protect her people from the sea demons. Upon meeting Faren, David also knows he has found his one and only. David is an amazing character, especially when he professes his love after discovering Faren is a mer and not human. His kindness and sheer determination shine throughout the story, making him an endearing leading man. When the sea demons attack Atlantis, Faren and David fight together to protect her people, saving each other along the way. McLaren does a masterful job of balancing the budding romance, introducing and developing secondary characters, and integrating the fast-paced fighting scenes that keep the pages flying by. Seeking acceptance for their relationship from both cultures makes Faren and David a compelling and captivating couple that you can’t help but cheer for. Vivid characters, world building, and plenty of pulse-pounding action make Mythos a gripping story all the way to the wonderfully romantic conclusion, and this novel leaves the reader anxious for the next book in the Mer Chronicles. Perfect for adults and teens alike. I received an eBook copy of the book for the purpose of an honest review. I was not compensated for this review, and all conclusions are my own responsibility.

I have been meaning to read this for a while. Having not read a lot of mermaid fiction, this put a new twist on one of the oldest themes of love stories, forbidden love. Faren is a mer (mermaid), and David is a human. Mer society forbids mers from associating with humans, let alone falling in love. At the same time, Sea Demons plot the destruction of Atlantis, the undersea homeland of the mers. In the middle of the approaching conflict, the two star-crossed lovers secret is exposed and if the mers don't kill them, the sea demons might. The dialog gets a little overly sweat at times. One other drawback is the end is a little to deus ex machina, with human forces appearing out of nowhere to save the day. Still, for those who love mermaids, myths, and romance, it is a book well worth reading.(

Reviewed by Barbara Garcia for Readers' Favorite Mythos, by Heather McLaren, tells the story of David and his two friends intent on having the time of their lives during a Spring Break jaunt to the Bahamas. David, however, is quickly parted from the company of his friends as he meets a beautiful Mer (mermaid) named Faren, and becomes as smitten with her as she is with him. The love that quickly grows between them leads David on an epic adventure as he struggles to help save her race from the sea demons intent on destroying not only it, but the human race as well. Together, they face almost impossible odds, not only from the sea demons, but Faren's own kind determined to keep their forbidden union from continuing. But the races find they must unite to defeat the evil intent on destroying them all.  I really enjoyed Mythos by Heather McLaren. This is a story of true love, sacrifice, acceptance, loyalty, and triumph. I found it gripping, descriptive, immersive, and so seamlessly woven together that I never felt I was left hanging as I moved from one section to the next. The locations, above and below the water, were vividly painted by the author, as were the characters that populated the legendary continent of Atlantis. The secondary characters of the story were treated with equal detail, and they all fit nicely into the story with their own parts to play. I definitely recommend this book, but be prepared to be completely swept away by this enchanting story!

I have read so many mermaid books, but this one stood out above the rest! Faren and David make me want to travel to the Bahamas and find the lost city of Atlantis! I loved the romance. The love scenes were very sexy but they were still tame. I like how the author gave young people something to read that is still set at their level. My mom had me check it out before my little sisters could read it, and I don't worry at all. Their is violence in this book, but it is approprate for what's going on the story. The whole time I was reading the chase scenes and the war scenes, etc I could see it like it was a movie playing out in my head. I REALLY hope they put this on the big screen! Does anyone know if there will be a second book anytime soon?

This book was AWESOME! I can't believe more people haven't read it already! I loved the sea demons and the chase scenes. It was soap opera meets horror meets romance! You need to read this book. Twilight... move over!
