About the Author

Although David Morrell is best known for his award-winning novel First Blood, he is also a former professor of American literature. With an M.A. and Ph.D. from Penn State, he taught in the English department at the University of Iowa for sixteen years. As a teenager, wanting to become a composer and arranger, he devoted several years to studying musical theory, harmony, counterpoint, and orchestration. He played piano in dance bands and small clubs. Simultaneously, he became interested in writing novels and eventually abandoned what he had expected would be a career in music.
Morrell is the author of more than thirty books, including the espionage trilogy, The Brotherhood of the Rose (the basis for the only television miniseries to be broadcast after a Super Bowl), The Fraternity of the Stone, and The League of Night and Fog. An Edgar, Anthony, and Macavity nominee, he received the career-achievement Thriller Master award from the International Thriller Writers organization in 2009. With eighteen million copies in print, his work has been translated into twenty-six languages. He can be contacted at his website,
