This book gives a totally different picture of Churchill as one who stands across the Channel to defy Hitler. Besides illuminating the differences within Churchill's cabinet, it shows Churchill as a man of roller coaster emotions---- strident on one hand and then delving into the depths of depression. The author keeps using the fate of Churchill's father and his dismissal from government as a backdrop to Winston's back and forth emotions that play central to wartime decisions. The book also brings in the reality of the concentration camps through the introduction of a German emigree on who Churchill relies to bring his compass back from the depths of depression. The author also uses two characters, one English and one French, to demonstrate the suspicion those two countries had toward each other at the beginning of the war. The reader will get caught up in the machinations of politics and the coniving of Ambassador Joseph Kennedy in trying to keep the U.S. out of the war--- his constant conversations with various British politicians to try to get England to broker a surrender with Germany. For history buffs, this is a great read. This is the second book in the series. Read the first one--Winston's War.
