But it's 1849, and while gold runs free in California, slavery's manacle still chokes the South. There was only one man Exum could trust with his moneyand the task of going south for a woman -- Solomon Hawk.

"..I'll go," Cassie Lee volunteered, and stepped forward from the band of slaves to snatch the promise of freedom from the stranger's hand. Cassie Lee didn't know where she was going or what she would find but she knew California had to be better that the enslaved South. And the adventure begins!

This book was recommended by a friend.  After reading it in a 72 hour period, I had to thank her for such a powerful read.  As an avid reader, I am always looking for a book that will not disappoint and will not just hold my interest but feel as if the author is writing in such a way that allows me to feel the intensity of each chapter as if I am present in the moment observing from just a few feet away.  Gay Gunn and few others have managed to do so. The romance was breathtaking and the character development was awesome.  The themes, timeline and geographic locations created such depth to the story.  I truly enjoyed meeting and appreciating each character's past, present and future.

A Love Story Indeed! Laughed and cried, felt as if I was in the story myself watching the events unfold. Awesome Author! To Be Free, something we take for granted everyday. Stories like these awaken my senses and I am thankful for those who fought to pave the way to our freedom.

I read this wonderful book several years ago and Cassie Lee and Solomon instantly became two of my all time favorite characters. Cassie Lee is a smart, brave and ethical woman who is able to dream big and work to make her dreams a reality. Solomon is a practical, honorable and loving man who takes charge when necessary. It is easy to get lost in their world of adventure and love. My re-read of the book this summer reminded me that not only are the characters admirable and exciting but the story Gay G. Gunn weaves is full of risky and unexpected twists that keep you fully engaged. All of this is interlaced with historical and geographical details designed to transport the reader to the mid-1800s in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, the Georgia countryside and San Francisco. This work is clearly worth a first, second, third and even fourth read! Gay G. Gunn is known to write literature that transcends most loves stories. Nowhere to Run is not an exception. In fact I think it is my favorite Gay G. Gunn book, at least until I read or re-read one of her other books!

Ms. Gunn definitely put her heart and soul into Nowhere to Run. From the first sentence the reader is catapulted into the world of Cassie Lee and Solomon. With a sharp eye for detail and the ability to write beautiful imagery, she really delivers! In a time when African Americans had absolutely no rights as human beings, her characters displayed the kind of strength and resilience worthy of hero worship. Yes, Nowhere to Run is romantic and sensual. However the author demonstrated the kind of depth we've come to expect from so-called 'serious' reads, the kind that top the New York Times Bestseller lists. I've seen books that make that list which truly don't live up to the honor. Nowhere to Run should have been there when it debuted. But perhaps you, the reader, can get the word out now: THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ!!! 'Nuff said?
