About the Author

James started writing comic scripts while at Aberdeen University and continued after graduation because nobody would give him a real job. His first attempt at crime fiction, NATURAL CAUSES introduced the world to Detective Inspector Tony McLean, and was short-listed for the CWA Debut Dagger in 2007. Its follow up, THE BOOK OF SOULS, was short-listed the following year. When neither of them set the publishing world on fire he decided to go it alone and publish them as e-books. Combined downloads of the two titles topped 300,000 in their first six months.

After signing with literary agent extraordinaire Juliet Mushens, his first three Inspector McLean books were sold at auction to Penguin, and in 19 other countries around the world. He has now been a Sunday Times bestseller for 4 of his books. James was short-listed for the National Book Awards New Writer of the Year award in 2013. There are now nine books in the series, the most recent of which, COLD AS THE GRAVE, was published by Wildfire in February 2019. Book ten, BURY THEM DEEP, was published in February 2020. The eleventh book in the series, WHAT WILL BURN, was published in 2021, and the twelfth, ALL THAT LIVES, will be out in 2022.

James is also author of the Constance Fairchild series. NO TIME TO CRY was published in November 2018 and NOTHING TO HIDE in August 2019, both by Wildfire. NOWHERE TO RUN is the third in the series.

In his spare time, James runs a 350 acre livestock farm in North-East Fife, where he raises pedigree Highland Cattle.

J. D. Oswald is the pseudonym of bestselling crime writer James Oswald. Penguin acquired rights to his five-book fantasy series THE BALLAD OF SIR BENFRO, which begins with DREAMWALKER, published in August 2014. THE ROSE CORD, THE GOLDEN CAGE and THE BROKEN WORLD followed in 2015, and the series concluded with THE OBSIDIAN THRONE in 2016. Inspired by the language and folklore of Wales, it follows the adventures of a young dragon, Sir Benfro, in a land where his kind have been hunted by men to the brink of extinction.
