When veterinarian Carolyn Becker catches her fiance cheating, her problem-solving skills come to the rescue. She swears off love and leaves suburbia for a fresh start in St. Louis to launch a low-cost animal clinic...and bury the past.

But new beginnings can be complicated. Secrets surface when a mysterious man, a troubled teenager, and an injured dog enter her life. Before she knows it, Carolyn's best-laid plans unravel, and solutions are farther from her reach than Mars. Sometimes even a problem-solver can use a little help.

Especially when it comes to mending a broken heart.

Reviewed by Louanne Piccolo for Readers' Favorite On a City Street by Pat Wahler is a book about new beginnings. Veterinarian Carolyn Becker moves to St Louis after a painful breakup. She throws herself into her work at a low-cost animal clinic with the intention of living a simple and carefree life. Unfortunately, her plans are challenged with the arrival of Coby – a troubled teenage boy – and an injured dog, Stella. Hot on their heels comes Rio, a man Carolyn has noticed lurking in the street. Although he seems helpful, Carolyn feels that something about him is not quite right. Is Rio who he says he is, and should Carolyn trust him? The answers to these questions become even more important when Carolyn realizes that Coby is in danger, and Rio may have something to do with it. An intense read, On a City Street builds in momentum, pulling the reader into a contemporary romance mixed with thrilling crime events that result in a gripping conclusion. Through the story of Carolyn’s move to St Louis as backdrop, Pat Wahler explores the complexity of human relationships and the controversial theme of animal abuse. On a City Street addresses human interest as well as weighty social issues, making it not only a feel-good book, but a sobering and thought-provoking one too. Each character is faced with a new beginning; will they grab at it with both hands or lose the opportunity to move on to better things? A delightful read for fans of contemporary romance with a touch of real-life angst.

Reviewed by Jack Magnus for Readers' Favorite On a City Street is a contemporary romance novel written by Pat Wahler. Dr. Carolyn Baker had left her seemingly perfect world behind and was starting again in a charming if tiny, new apartment complete with a panoramic view of the Gateway Arch. From where she now lived, she had access to everything she needed; she was even a brisk walk away from the newly created spay/neuter clinic where she working. She had graduated from veterinary school, secured a good job as a vet and was ready to marry her life-long friend and sweetheart when suddenly everything went horribly awry. She just knew this fresh start would work. She was pleased to see progress on getting the clinic ready for Monday’s opening had been considerable since she had been interviewed there. Teena Jacobs, who would be her assistant, was already there and hard at work. While their conversation began somewhat awkwardly, a kinship began to form between the two women from vastly different backgrounds. Yes, Carolyn’s plans to begin again were already starting to fall into place. Watching as the somewhat geeky and unworldly Dr. Baker and her pragmatic assistant Teena Jacobs find common ground is a grand and glorious thing, but there’s so much more waiting for the reader who ventures past the drudgery of Carolyn Baker’s move and explores her new environs along with her. I loved seeing how she adapts to the urban setting she had chosen even as I worried, along with Teena and Rio, at her impulsive decisions to track down bad guys in the neighborhood. On a City Street is a sweet romance with an underlying mystery that will keep readers wondering throughout. This well-written novel has a plot that keeps readers engaged, and characters who soon come to feel like old friends. Pat Wahler's On a City Street is most highly recommended.

Reviewed by Trudi LoPreto for Readers' Favorite Carolyn is about to be married but when plans do not work out, she packs up, leaves her parents' home and heads to St. Louis and a new job. Carolyn had no idea that her life would get so involved and exciting. She had planned to keep to herself, set up and have the new low-cost animal clinic become successful under her veterinarian skills. Instead, Carolyn found two men vying for her attention, a young misguided boy she knew she could help, and an office that was not getting enough neuter surgeries and was close to being closed down. Carolyn handles all of these situations with strength and wisdom. Some things work out; others not so much. Altogether, this makes for a good reading experience. Romance is at the heart of On A City Street as well as heartbreak, mystery, new beginnings and surprise endings. I really enjoyed On A City Street a lot. Author Pat Wahler has created characters that are either very likable or obvious jerks. I found it really hard to put the book down and loved the twist ending. I found it refreshing to read about romantic encounters without any sexual content and yet still knew exactly what was happening. I believe that On A City Street would be a smash hit movie on the Hallmark Channel, appealing to all lovers of the romance genre with a little mystery, suspense and fun splashed in for good measure. I highly recommend On A City Street; it is a great summer read while sitting around the pool or on your porch. Please do not pass this one up.
