Overview

On Every Side by Karen Kingsbury

After suffering the loss of his mother and separation from his sister and the girl he loved, Jordan Riley fills the holes in his soul with anger. But Faith Evans begins to disassemble the walls around Jordan ’s heart, and he realizes there’s something very familiar about her…

Everything Is on the Line

...for Faith Evans,

an up-and-coming newscaster. A woman of honor and integrity, who finds herself making a stand against the one man she never imagined would be her enemy...

...for Jordan Riley,

a powerful attorney dedicated to fighting for human rights and against God. A man still reckoning with the boyhood loss of the three women who once meant everything to him...

...for Bethany, Pennsylvania,

a small town no one ever dreamed would become the center of national attention. But it has. All because of a beloved, hundred-year-old statue of Jesus Christ that stands in Bethany’s park. A statue that some say is a clear violation of separation of church and state. A statue that has to come down. A statue that suddenly becomes the focus of a bitter conflict—one rife with political intrigue, social injustice, and personal conflicts. Before it’s over, everything that Jordan and Faith and the town of Bethany stand for will be challenged.

Will love be enough when the battle rages on every side?

Story Behind the Book

“Each of my novels is a piece of my heart. Where Yesterday Lives was my first-ever novel, and as such it is somewhat autobiographical. The childhood story of Ellen Barrett, her love for her parents and siblings, is my story—though her current story and struggles are fictional. On Every Side sheds light on the struggle for religious freedom in today’s climate; something I am passionate about. Finally, When Joy Came to Stay is the story of one woman’s battle against depression and the secrets of her past.”

Jordan Riley lost faith in God as a teenager when his mother died in 1985 in Bethany, Pennsylvania. Feeling God abandoned him and his sister, he turned to the State for sustenance. Now a successful attorney, Jordan challenges any locale in which the government at any level and a religion intersect. He always wins the First Amendment fight of separation of church and state in the courtroom, but not inside his heart.

Jordan returns to Bethany to force the town to remove the statue of Jesus from its public location. TV reporter Faith Evans, a woman Jordan never forgot about when that fateful summer ended his beliefs, leads his opposition. Faith risks her already shaky journalist position to reach out to Jordan, hoping and praying that her love for him will touch his soul before the courtroom battle destroys this little town and their love.

ON EVERY SIDE is a strong inspirational romance that focuses on the separation of state and religion issue that seems to be in the news all the time. The characters are a realistic bunch though their names are not subtle in meaning. The story line is well written and readers who relish a healing tale will devour this novel. However, fans expecting Inherit the Wind need to look elsewhere even with Karen Kingsbury obvious story telling talent because it is the inspiration not the legal issue that takes front and center in this plot.

I love all of Karen's books. She is the top Christian author in my mind! Her books are not true but could be. In this book she shows how people fall from their faith and after many years come back. They were never really happy being without the Jesus in their hearts and not spending time with Christians. Love it!

In Bethany, Pennsylvania, the long standing Jesus statue in Jericho Park suddenly airs on national television when Jordan Riley, an attorney fighting against God, demands the statue be removed. The whole town of Bethany comes together to keep this from happening when a well loved citizen, Faith Evans, risks her career in order to save the statue and follow in her dad's footsteps. When all hope seems lost for Bethany, Faith Evans realizes that her enemy, Jordan Riley, is her long lost best friend. For Jordan Riley, this means fighting against the girl he once, and still is in love with. Which love is stronger to win the battle, the love of a career, a friend, or a belief? A major message in the book On Every Side is having the patience to wait for God to answer prayers and believing that He has a plan. For Faith, and even the citizens of Bethany, a symbol of their beliefs is about to be removed and they are doing all they can to save it. Eventually, they have to give their worries up to God and believe that He will take care of them. Another message for readers is listening to God. Throughout the whole story, God is working in Jordan and Faith's lives because He has a plan. He calls Faith to a major battle and calls Jordan to the same one. The reader is caused to wonder where God is working in their life. It also makes the reader listen to God in case if He has a battle for us to fight. One thing I loved about this book was the surprises. Many different problems became apparent throughout the book, but so many exciting things also happened in the book. From one flip of the page the dynamics of the story could totally change. Another thing I also like about the book is how thoroughly the author develops the characters. She really lets you get to know them on a deeper level. You know their thoughts, their feelings, and their emotions at all times. Also, I enjoy how she lets the perspective change from character to character because it helps you understand every side of the story. One thing I dislike is that there is no sequel to the story. Other than that, I have to complaints! People should definitely read this because it is a story that keeps you guessing. You never want to put the book down. It also helps you examine your life and your relationship with God. God works miracles in this book and it helps the reader realize how amazing and powerful He really is. Some other books I recommend is the One Tuesday Morning series by Karen Kingsbury. These books also are unpredictable. By the end of the series, you feel like the characters are real people because of how well they are developed. These books keep your mind racing and you never want to put them down. My overall rating for this book is 5 stars.
