By the middle grades, children know the storylines of familiar fairytales, which makes them all the funnier when they veer off in different directions. Good ‘fractured fairytales’ twist the child reader’s perspective on the story, showing other possibilities. From a frog, who thinks he’s Sleeping Beauty, to a cool-rappin’ fairy godmother who sends Cinderella to a Hip-Hop Ball, to a boy who waits beneath a stone bridge to fool trolls, Once Upon a Twisted Tale is a rollicking, rhyme-filled poetry collection that can be read for sheer amusement or used in a classroom to compare original tales to the twisted tales as per Language Arts requirements.

What a unique and amusing spin on the typical fairy tale! Teachers will especially love the way the author, Ms. Krause, uses familiar characters, then puts a unique twist on each story. The results are quite comical and will leave you feeling giddy. One of my favorites was The Cindy Rap by Cool "G." Who knew Cinderella's fairy godmother could rap that way! There are countless ways these poems can be used in the classroom. Comparing them to the original fairy tales would be just one fun activity. The possibilities are endless. Krause's lively and colorful vocabulary and use of many poetic devices make this a very entertaining read.

Gayle Krause does a beautiful job connecting the generations by mixing and matching fairy tale poems in ways that families can enjoy for generations to come. She incorporates numerous poetic devices that engage readers of all ages. Humor, rhyme, vibrant descriptive language all captivate the imagination. A perfect addition to homes, schools, and local libraries.

My nieces and nephews loved the rhythm and rhyme of these stories. They challenged each other to guess which original fairy tales were combined into each twisted tale. This book provided the perfect opportunity for them to compare and contrast many different fairy tales!

This is such a fun book that spins the classics into new, twisty tales that will spark your imagination. The rhyming text is lovely and the new versions are hilarious. My favorite is the gingerbread man who is reduced to a crumb. Marvelously wicked. Great book!

Twisted tales are always fun to read. But a book of twisted tales in poetry? Perfect! There are plenty of twisted tale poems and I cannot wait to read them to my class! I also got a Teacher’s Guide, too! This book will be a great addition to my class library, and for using to compare and contrast original fairytales and the poems in the book.

Fairy tales are mixed & matched, twisted & turned in this collection of fairy tale poems. My favorite was Just Desserts, in which the Big Bad Wolf meets the Little Red Hen. Older children will enjoy identifying the characters and fairy tales alluded to, and may be inspired to produce some twisted tales of their own!

Have you ever wondered what would happen if Cinderella met the Frog Prince instead of Prince Charming? Well wonder no more. Gayle C Krause has twisted classic fairy tale folk together added rhyme and a dash of humor to make a wonderful poetry collection. Readers will be ready to spot their favorite characters in new situations. Educators will find it helpful to show a wide range of poetic forms. A book to enjoy over and over again.

This collection of poems is a fun, fresh take on old, tired fairy tales! Your children or students will love reading or hearing these poems. Gayle Krause has included a variety of poetic forms and woven elements from many tales into this book. You'll find rhyme, humor, and a little darkness. Some of my favorite poems were The Emperor's Bodyguard, The Zig Zag Path, and Seeing Red. These poems appeal to various ages and background knowledge will enrich the meaning, so they offer lots of teachable moments. Illustrator Caroline O'Neal's colorful artwork adds to the fun!
