Overview

In this fast-paced historical thriller, #1 New York Times bestselling author David Baldacci introduces Archer, a WWII veteran forced to investigate a small-town murder — or risk returning to prison.

It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of do's and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job—and don't ever associate with loose women.

The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail. Within a single night, his search for gainful employment—and a stiff drink—leads him to a local bar, where he is hired for what seems like a simple job: to collect a debt owed to a powerful local businessman, Hank Pittleman.

Soon Archer discovers that recovering the debt won't be so easy. The indebted man has a furious grudge against Hank and refuses to pay; Hank's clever mistress has her own designs on Archer; and both Hank and Archer's stern parole officer, Miss Crabtree, are keeping a sharp eye on him.

When a murder takes place right under Archer's nose, police suspicions rise against the ex-convict, and Archer realizes that the crime could send him right back to prison . . . if he doesn't use every skill in his arsenal to track down the real killer.

When I purchased this e book there were no reviews listed. There was no description or over view of the book. At first I was disappionted that this story takes place during the late 1940's/1950's. I prefer stories about current times. I kept with this book as I liked the main character. As the story progressed I was liking the book more and more. Great twists and turns. I was not able to figure out the "who done it". This was definitly an enjoyable read.

This book as a far cry from what I had expected from Baldacci. I like his new character--Archer--who is trying to rebuild his life after serving in WW II and spending time in prison for a crime he did not commit. He nails the time period with respect to how women were thought of. As usual, his characters are well developed and we get to know them. However, I did feel there was a more "formula" aspect in this novel than his past ones. I still enjoyed this book very much and will look forward to the continuation of this series.

it's a good story, depicting the fifties. my dad was in the service so I related to most of the story. he was a heavy smoker and drinker, my mom a housewife. that part of the story was almost as compelling as the mystery itself. Thanks for another good read.

I had almost given up on Baldacci. it seemed like everything was shooting, killing, and vicious acts by both the law and the lawless. I took a chance on this one. It sounded different and it was so different I kept wondering if I was reading the same author. My husband and I both thoroughly enjoyed the characters, the plot, the style of writing and every storyline. It was creative, funny, logical, believable. Thank you, David Baldacci. Please bring Archer and Shaw back. We hope this becomes a series and if it does, we will read every book.

I enjoyed this book a lot, it started out a bit slowly, but then took off with a series of events and characters that were interesting and believable... A great snapshot of post-war, small town USA. Really a great read, kept me interested to the end. I hope this is the beginning of another great series!
