Overview

The #1 New York Times bestselling author David Baldacci introduces an unforgettable new character: Archer, a straight-talking former World War II soldier fresh out of prison for a crime he didn't commit.

It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of do's and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job—and don't ever associate with loose women.

The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail. Within a single night, his search for gainful employment—and a stiff drink—leads him to a local bar, where he is hired for what seems like a simple job: to collect a debt owed to a powerful local businessman, Hank Pittleman.

Soon Archer discovers that recovering the debt won't be so easy. The indebted man has a furious grudge against Hank and refuses to pay; Hank's clever mistress has her own designs on Archer; and both Hank and Archer's stern parole officer, Miss Crabtree, are keeping a sharp eye on him.

When a murder takes place right under Archer's nose, police suspicions rise against the ex-convict, and Archer realizes that the crime could send him right back to prison . . . if he doesn't use every skill in his arsenal to track down the real killer.

This book as a far cry from what I had expected from Baldacci. I like his new character--Archer--who is trying to rebuild his life after serving in WW II and spending time in prison for a crime he did not commit. He nails the time period with respect to how women were thought of. As usual, his characters are well developed and we get to know them. However, I did feel there was a more "formula" aspect in this novel than his past ones. I still enjoyed this book very much and will look forward to the continuation of this series.

When I purchased this e book there were no reviews listed. There was no description or over view of the book. At first I was disappionted that this story takes place during the late 1940's/1950's. I prefer stories about current times. I kept with this book as I liked the main character. As the story progressed I was liking the book more and more. Great twists and turns. I was not able to figure out the "who done it". This was definitly an enjoyable read.

Started reading and then couldn't put it down. Could not go to bed until I finished the story. I am mature and loved reminiscing about the 40s.

Because the story seemed to be moving very slowly. I decided that I had been reading a lot of books lately that were short and had to move along. The only redeeming character in this book was Aloysius Archer, even though he lied and took things he shouldn't have. The courtroom scene was like a Perry Mason novel. The book is very good.

very good and fast moving

The character development shallow, current venacular incongruant with 1940's era, repetative dialogue - found myself not caring what happened - Baldacci is one of my favorite authors but this didn't measure up to his high standards - will keep reading his great books but not this new characture

Reading One Good Deed, I felt like I lived in the dusty little town of Poca City and knew each character. Loved Aloyisus Archer and look forward to a new, great shamus! Mr. Baldacci NEVER disappoints!

I love Baldaccis's books, but this one was a major disappointment. The plot was thin. The characters weren't interesting at all. I hope Archer isn't a reoccurring character.
