Many FloridaGardener.com readers have inquired about what kinds of flowering shrubs are available to brighten-up their yards and gardens. Well now there is an excellent source of information available that I highly recommend adding to your Florida gardening library -- Ornamental Tropical Shrubs. Amanda Jarrett¿s book includes 55 shrubs that will grow in USDA Zones 10 ¿ 11 and 28 that can be grown even further north into Zones 8 and 9 enabling gardeners in the temperate areas of the state to give their yards a tropical flavor! 83 shrubs in all are discussed in Amanda¿s book and she also includes such useful information as the plants¿ countries of origin, USDA Zones, drought tolerance, salt tolerance, growth rate, potential plant disease and insect problems as well as the basics of preferred soil type, sun exposure, mature size and form and flower and fruit descriptions for each plant. But by far the best part of the book is Amanda¿s hundreds of full-color photographs of the plants she has documented growing in Ft. Myers and Miami, Florida. Amanda also includes information in the back of the book which teaches how to put the right plant in the right place, how to fertilize, prune and keep your ornamental tropical shrubs healthy. She goes even further by including a section which categorizes the plants she discusses into shrubs that are suitable for everything from accent shrubs and bird and butterfly gardens to those that flower year-round. Amanda Jarrett is a horticultural consultant, writer, photographer, instructor and lecturer. She is a Florida Certified Horticultural Professional and a member of the Florida Nurserymen and Growers Association and the Garden Writers of America. She lives in Cape Coral, Florida, where she writes a weekly gardening column for The Cape Coral News-Press.
