'Paul Morel' is made up of the second and third drafts of the book later to become 'Sons and Lovers'. The first draft is lost. Lawrence worked on these drafts during 1911.
There is much that is familiar but also much that is new. There are scenes from Lawrence's early childhood, characters who do not appear in 'Sons and Lovers' and events which were perhaps seen as 'over dramatic' and discarded from the finished novel.
