Overview

Brian Rasoldi and his fourth-grade class think Ms. Reynolds is nuts when she walks in with a pile of newspapers, a green doll, a copy of the Declaration of Independence, a library book, and a fireman's hat. But when they find out they're taking a class trip to Philadelphia, it all starts to make sense.

Join Brian and his friends as they learn about the City of Brotherly Love, from its history and mysteries to its famous residents, including William Penn, Benjamin Franklin, and Will Smith. Philadelphia is also home to the Phillies and the Eagles, and it hosts the Mummers Parade, which entertains fans with their feathers and strings every New Year's Day. Gr 4-6–This series follows students in fictional fourth-grade classes as they prepare for and go on on visits to noteworthy American cities. As each group prepares for its field trip, the students are asked to research the city, and their “reports” become chapters on the city's history, geography, populations, sports, popular culture, and landmarks. The last section describes the children visiting some of attractions they have learned about. Maps and attractive color photos and illustrations, a “Just the Facts” page with basic information, time lines, and instructions for craft projects add to the text. Although the premise of the series is best described as a gimmick, these books will help young readers learn about and become more interested in some of America's most important cities.
