It's Monday of spring break when Professor Lyssa Pennington's backyard garden project unearths a loaded revolver. With no record of violence at their address and no related cold case, the Tompkins Falls police have no interest. But the Penningtons and a friend with the State Police believe there's a body somewhere. Whose? Where? And who pulled the trigger?
The Penningtons' canvass of their quiet neighborhood turns up disturbing secrets about the family that lived in their house for decades and another ill-fated family a few doors away. Lyssa follows the money story and finds twenty million dollars, a neighbor who's not what he seems, and a long-buried rivalry. Kyle goes after homicide data in six states and finds a body. Their next surprise is a murderer who will go to any length to conceal the crime.

An old-fashioned Agatha Christie style cozy. This is a mystery that epitomizes what is meant by a cozy—a small village, two smart, curious academics, and almost everyone in the neighborhood has motive to have buried a gun in the Pennington’s garden. The number of suspects and the cleverness of the guilty are no match for Lyssa and Kyle Pennington’s detecting skills. You’ll love the twists and turns in the plot and look forward to the next case in the Pennington investigations. I give it five stars.
Lyssa Pennington has two major unfinished projects. The first is reestablishing the prize winning rose garden at her new home and the other is successfully rebuilding her life from a former path of self-destruction. She is successfully forging a career as a professor of economics at a college in the Finger Lakes and best of all has met and married the love of her life, the suave, handsome Kyle Pennington. That doesn’t mean it’s always smooth sailing. The discovery of a hidden gun in the garden brings trouble in the progress toward both goals. Lyssa is still able to be rocked by anxiety and confusion but battles bravely to keep an even keel and solve the mystery of past events tainting the tranquility of her home. Kyle is ever understanding and supportive but some of Lyssa choices anger and terrify him. The plot is fast moving as things develop quickly. Set in a small college town, PLANTED, includes an intriguing group of supporting characters with interactions that are realistic and sometimes amusing. The Penningtons need both their professional and personal skills, as Lyssa and Kyle take on all challenges and with love, honesty and surprising inner strength and come out even stronger. This is the first in what promises to be terrific series
If you liked the witty banter of Nick and Nora Charles in the Thin Man movies, you will love Planted, the first in CT Collier's Penningtons Investigate series. Set in a small Upstate New York college town, the story begins with a bang (literally) when Kyle and Lyssa Pennington discover that someone has buried a gun in their rose garden. Soon, the debonair couple is drawn into the thick of a murder investigation. I enjoyed the smart dialogue and numerous plot twists in this story. If you are looking for a fast paced and intelligent story, you need look no further.
