Plot It Yourself (Nero Wolfe Series) by Rex Stout

When a group of publishers and writers hires Wolfe to solve a case of false plagiarism, it's time for the great detective to hit the books. Four unrelated accusers—including a down-and-out hack writer and a lady poet with a penchant for nude sunbathing—have been fleecing bestselling authors, claiming the authors have stolen their work and ingeniously planting evidence to back up their claims. But when punctuation gives way to puncture, Wolfe knows this is no simple case of extortion. This time he'll need all the critical skills at his disposal to close the book on a killer well versed on the ABCs of murder.

Introduction by Susan Dunlap

“It is always a treat to read a Nero Wolfe mystery. The man has entered our folklore.”—The New York Times Book Review
A grand master of the form, Rex Stout is one of America’s greatest mystery writers, and his literary creation Nero Wolfe is one of the greatest fictional detectives of all time. Together, Stout and Wolfe have entertained—and puzzled—millions of mystery fans around the world. Now, with his perambulatory man-about-town, Archie Goodwin, the arrogant, gourmandizing, sedentary sleuth is back in the original seventy-three cases of crime and detection written by the inimitable master himself, Rex Stout.

Good Nero Wolfe yarn, but this ebook version has annoying typos. Any longtime fan of the series knows Orrie's last name: Cather. In this ebook he is called Orrie Gather, an obvious spell-checker error that a human copyeditor should have caught. There are a few other such, but this one annoyed me the most. As Wolfe would say, plfui!

Any reader who opens a Nero Wolfe book will always feel as comfortable as if they were in his own house, while the chaos of the outside world moves in. I have always placed Nero Wolfe as a genius, Archie as a clever man and a wit, and Inspector Cramer as the ordinary man in action and temperment. In the story about plagiarism and murder there is no exception. Rex Stout is an original author anyone would be proud to see on their bookshelf.

All of the Wolfe/Goodwin books are good. Some, like this book, are exceptional. The mystery is convoluted and packed with numerous plausible suspects. As always, the dialogue is smart and witty, and the characters are brilliantly conceived. As one reviewer noted, the proofreading job was lamentably done. There are many annoying little errors that should have been seen and fixed by the publisher.
