Policing Muses: A History With Pasties & Mirkins
A brief academic but tongue-in-cheek look at covering women's bodies in the arts.
From raids & arrests, interviews with living burlesque legends, to current common blue laws & including FOSTA/SESTA effecting artists online.
Historians and literature often discuss the struggles of fashionably brave women, showgirls, & sex workers with glazed over eyes and hushed voices, easily digested and forgotten. If it's too scandalous it is giggled at then rushed over quickly. But never has it actually included sex workers voices.
It's time to diversify the narrative.

About the Author

Mekaella Lord is also known by her stage name Lady Mekaella DeMure.
Lady Mekaella received a humanities certificates from both Harvard & The Smithsonian Institute, while topless with a bottle of wine and a cat in her lap. She's a traveling showgirl known as Florida's Naked Nerd with over two decades in the performing arts and nightlife entertainment. She's now working on her second certification class for historians from Harvard via online classes during Covid19 shutdowns.

When she wasn't winning multiple titles and awards in her industry as a burlesque showgirl, eating fire, laying on beds of nails, gogo dancing in stilts, founding cosplay charity organizations, hustling in strip clubs in her downtime between traveling the country with her nerdlesque acts, she was taking on her own censorship battle in a small FL town where a well known misogynist was battling her at city hall to shut down her five year running inclusive body positive production series. Spoiler alert: She won & it inspired her to honour the trailblazers before her with a special appreciation for the hidden histories of showgirls all her career and to even use her platform as an artist in the public eye for social justice, as a plus sized openly queer woman with a voice.
