About the Author

Eric J. Guignard is a writer and editor of dark and speculative fiction, operating from the shadowy outskirts of Los Angeles. He's twice won the Bram Stoker Award, been a finalist for the International Thriller Writers Award, and a multi-nominee of the Pushcart Prize. He has over one hundred stories and non-fiction author credits appearing in publications around the world. As editor, Eric's published six anthologies including, DARK TALES OF LOST CIVILIZATIONS, AFTER DEATH..., and A WORLD OF HORROR, a showcase of international horror short fiction. Evoking the structure and sentiment of The Thackery T. Lambshead Pocket Guide to Eccentric & Discredited Diseases from Jeff Vandermeer and Mark Roberts, this high-concept anthology was clearly put together with a lot of heart, but bites off more than it can chew. Purported to be a collaboration with paranormal investigator Charlatan Bardot, the book seeks to document haunted structures beyond the typical haunted house, but does a disservice to its many excellent stories with its messy packaging and convoluted conceit. It’s a who’s-who of supernatural fiction, with brilliant pieces from Eugen Bacon (“A Taste of Unguja”), Clara Madrigano (“Into the River”), Lisa Morton (“The Gulch”), H. Pueyo (“Juan Clemente’s Well”), Eugenia Triantafyllou (“Fish Tale”), Tlotlo Tsamaase (“The Biophilic-Designed Haunting”), and Kaaron Warren (“Warp and Weft”), among others. Tales are grouped by continent and divided into featured stories and tiny tales, the latter of which comprise one-page flash fiction pieces. Unfortunately, the maps between the stories disrupt the flow and the “travel guide notes” from Bardot that serve as introductions grow annoying. Still, there’s enough talent on display here to make this worth a look. (Nov.)

Featuring locations—and authors—spanning the globe, this entertaining romp blends eerie and imaginative chills with beautiful artwork and luscious maps that ensure readers will forget these settings are fictional. Whether in a haunted mausoleum in Singapore courtesy of Christina Sng or a Liverpool department store with an increasingly unhinged security guard presented by Ramsey Campbell, this assemblage of short stories ("Feature Entries") and even shorter stories ("Tiny Tales") treats horror fans to a worldwide tour of the macabre. Readers will delight in poring over these sites and experiencing the palpable enthusiasm and heart of the featured authors. Though his fictional coeditor's name graces the title, Guignard deserves all the credit for his exquisite attention to detail in assembling this smorgasbord of horror authors to know. VERDICT An ambitious and beautifully constructed anthology that fans of the genre won't want to miss; a necessary addition to any library.
