J. P. Beaumont’s latest investigation strikes too close to home in this riveting mystery from New York Times bestselling author J. A. Jance.

Be careful what you wish for . . .

Before he retired, J. P. Beaumont had looked forward to having his days all to himself. But too much free time doesn’t suit a man used to brushing close to danger. When his longtime nemesis, retired Seattle crime reporter Maxwell Cole, dies in what’s officially deemed to be an accidental fire, Beau is astonished to be dragged into the investigation at the request of none other than the deceased victim himself. In the process Beau learns that just because a long-ago case was solved doesn’t mean it’s over.

Caught up in a situation where old actions and grudges can hold dangerous consequences in the present, Beau is forced to operate outside the familiar world of law enforcement. While seeking justice for his frenemy and healing for a long fractured family, he comes face to face with an implacable enemy who has spent decades hiding in plain sight.

This J P Beaumont novel is confusing in the begining with the naming (first and last names) of far too many characters in too few pages. However, by Chapter 5, and a character name review, the action picks up. The weaving together of a number of subplots is well-done, considering the number of characters. The author comes close to assuming a male persona, but she doesn't quite pull it off. This book succeeds because of its twists and turns. Overall, a satisfying read.

The first book I have read in this series and I liked it. I am not a big fan of series, but I think I will keep this one on my list. I like the characters and the flow seemed very realistic and possible, but still kept me guessing and engaged.

JP Beaumont is retired from the Seattle Police Department and bored out of his mind. He is contacted by Erin Howard, a young woman he once saved, to investigate the death of an old family friend. JP had known Maxwell Cole since their college days but they didn’t particularly like each other. Max was killed after a fire started in his bedroom. An empty liquor bottle, a lit cigar, and his oxygen tank led fire officials to declare it an accident. But Erin tells JP about Max telling her abou a book he was writing and he had uncovered something in his research. She thinks whatever he found got him killed and she wants JP to solve the case.

I have always enjoyed Jance's J P Beaumont series the best of all the characters she writes about. This latest just reinforces that. I had a hard time putting this one down. Sliding a dog into the mix really added even more flavor. I hope we get to hear more from J P soon.
