Quicklets: Learn More. Read Less. Yann Martel was born on June 25, 1963 as the son of a professor and a diplomat. Although he was born in Salamanca, Spain, he moved to different countries frequently because of his fathers career. He lived in several different countries before settling in Ontario, Canada to attend Trent University. While at Trent, he received a BA in Philosophy and began traveling around the world and writing short stories about his adventures. In 1993, he published this collection of stories, called The Facts Behind the Helsinki Roccamatios and his work received the Journey Prize. Martel then published his first novel in 1996 called Self. He then spent a great deal of time researching and then writing his most famous work, Life of Pi, which was published in Canada in 2001 and the United States in 2002. He won many awards for Life of Pi and the book was a national bestseller in both the U.S. and Canada, internationally it went on to sell over 3 million copies. Life of Pi is a fictional novel about a boy named Piscine Pi Molitor Patel from Pondicherry, India, who spends a great deal of his time exploring religion and spirituality. While on a ship from India to Canada with his family, his ship sinks and he finds himself stranded on a lifeboat for 227 days with a Bengal tiger from his fathers zoo. The story is told through an interview the author has with Pi many years later and it details Pis journey on the boat and the relationship he builds with this tiger, Richard Parker. This is where Pi was given his full name, Piscine Molitor Patel, a name he hated as a child until he gave himself the nickname Pi. Pi also describes the zoo that his father ran, the Pondicherry Zoo, and how he grew up around the animals.
