The book authored by Jane Gaddy is an intriging story passionately written about the lives of people who experienced the war between the states. An incite into both points of view of political interest affecting the lives of those people during the 1860's and Reconstruction. The author keeps your attention and allows you understand a history about this time, that you didn't read in school during your education. I couldn't put the book down! Excellent reading and I highly recommend it. Gary W

"Rachel After the Darkness," by Jane Bennett Gaddy PH.D. is an outstanding Historical Novel of the ravages of war that devastated Rachel's family, when her husband and son had their lives snuffed out at the Battle of Gettysburg. Rachel dealt with a cloud of darkness like she had never known. Rachel took her deep loss and grief step by step, as she built a bridge to reach out to the enemies of the North, as she found herself in the midst of New York City. Rachel found common ground to break barriers of fear, hatred, doubt, and extreme loneliness. Grief knows the deepest sorrows, and love knows the highest ecstasy, as Rachel and her sons face the great conflict of grief and love which collide within their hearts! Dr Gaddy brilliantly blends the Grace of God our Heavenly Father, with some of the deepest days of darkness in our American History, as it relates to her beloved ancestors! This author kept me on the edge, as South and North blend and mend their vast differences through so many riveting scenes of conflict, love, and resolve!! I learned much about my beloved New York State, and after visiting New York City many times, I could picture the scenes created in those war torn years in the mid 1800's! Dr Gaddy put me back in that era, in her brilliant historical writing style! I did not want this book to end and will definitely read it again......and SOON!

Jane, you made me see New York through Rachel's eyes - your eyes - as I know you love it second only to the Mississippi Delta. Like Oscar, I needed to hear the southern perspective of the war. I'm afraid our history books in Kansas did not do it justice.  Thank you for doing all the research required to bring these facts together in a charming novel format.  I have now read the entire set, savoring each story in its own right and following the Payne family as they lean more on our dear Lord through each new trial.   Keep writing!!
