In this apocalyptic sequel to Dark Inside’s “well-balanced, realistic suspense” (Kirkus Reviews), four teens continue the struggle for survival as they face a world gone mad.

Aries, Clementine, Michael, and Mason have survived the first wave of the apocalypse that wiped out most of the world’s population and turned many of the rest into murderous Baggers. Now they’re hiding out in an abandoned house in Vancouver with a ragtag group of fellow teen survivors, trying to figure out their next move.
Aries is trying to lead, but it’s hard to be a leader when there are no easy answers and every move feels wrong. Clementine is desperate to find her brother Heath, but it’s impossible to know where he’d be, assuming he’s alive. Michael is haunted by the memories of his actions during his harrowing struggle to survive. And Mason is struggling with something far worse: the fear that he may be a danger to his friends.
As the Baggers begin to create a new world order, these four teens will have to trust and rely on each other in order to survive.

Rage Within

  • Greetings and salutations.

    I know you missed me.

    I missed me too.

What can I say? I’ve been around. I’ve been seeing everything. Slinking through the streets. Crawling through the train tunnels. Walking across water with my eyes alight with fire. Licking the crud off spoons and picking at the chewing gum on my shoes.

None of it really matters. They’ve left me alone for now, but I know those days are ending. The Baggers want me back. They dropped their apron strings for a split second and the naughty child bolted into the wilderness. They won’t make the same mistake again. I hear them calling me. Now they’re starting to look. I’m on their radar. Eventually they will find me and drag me back by my heels.

    And things will change.

In a blink of an eye, history will repeat itself. Remember, we’ve been through this before. From the moment mankind stepped out of the primordial ooze, they’ve been here to keep us in our places. Obviously a select few lived to tell the tale; otherwise we wouldn’t be here now. But how many of us are going to survive this round?

    Tick, tock. Tick, tock.

    Time is running out.

If a tree falls in the middle of the city, does anyone notice? Do they hear the creaking of the wood? Do they witness the leaves shaking above them? Do they sense the desperation or feel the sudden gush of wind against their faces?

That one great second before gravity takes over and what was once magnificent becomes nothing but lumber.

Or do they just go about their daily chores, continue on to work with their lattes in hand, iPods blaring, BlackBerrys ringing, ignoring everything they’ve witnessed?

There were warnings. There are always warnings. But we missed them. We chose not to see. We didn’t believe.

    And now we are finished.

    Game Over.

The Baggers are gathering their armies around the world. They are taking back the cities, rebuilding civilization according to their terms. They have ideas. You wouldn’t like them.

Now humans are considered a virus. A mutation. A disease. They need to be removed from this world. The Baggers will control those who are left, to make sure humans don’t revert back to their own nasty ways.

I wake up sometimes in the dead of night. A panic I can’t explain from a dream I can’t remember. Is this my life? Am I destined to spend the remaining days wondering what is real and what is a nightmare?

    Who am I?

    I am Nothing.

    Am I?

Or am I the one they’ve grown to trust?

I want to be the one she wakes up to when the morning sun nuzzles her pillow. I want to walk along the seawall with her, holding hands and exchanging gentle glances. I want to hide her away in a castle or a log cabin where she’ll be safe and nothing can ever make her cry again.

But I’m more likely to be the one who holds the knife against her skin.

    Tick, tock. Tick, tock.

What happens next? Your guess is as good as mine.

  • What People are Saying About This

    From the Publisher

"Galloping suspense dominates this riveting sequel to post-apocalyptic Dark Inside...Roberts amps the tension in nearly every chapter, leaving cliffhangers throughout and returning to resolve them with yet more drama. Narration alternates chapter by chapter among the characters, shifting focus constantly and finally weaving several threads of the plotline together. Pulse-pounding tension."—Kirkus Reviews

The second book in the series and all I have to say is wow! Jeyn Roberts has kept the same thriller descriptions to bring chaos and death to a world gone wrong. Throughout the book I just kept thinking how disturbing the whole story is… so I would say Roberts has been successful in portraying what she wanted! In this book it is clear how much rage the ‘Baggers’ have within them as the violence is as gruesome as ever. I admire how Roberts has written these scenes because she has portrayed them in detail to create a vivid image in the reader’s mind to bring it to life, again disturbing, but clearly done. We carry on following the lives of Michael, Aries, Mason and Clementine and the adventures they have to face along the way. Working together they have to become tougher and less humane to survive in a world without water, heat, food and essentials. And what is the mysterious ‘Nothing’ chapter title that keeps coming up? Prepare to become engaged into a world of violence, secrecy, death and lies. A book not for the faint hearted… or late night readers!

    Hard to put down

First of all this series is amazing and has instantly become one of my favorites. Seeing the characters brought together and their new struggle to survive as a family brings new problems and even more questions. However, old questions have found some answers. I loved reading this book and I got completely lost in it. I finished it in one day and it left me wanting to read the third one right away. Like someone said in the comments below, the character development is just exceptional. I loved Aries from the beginning and seeing her struggle in this book and becoming the leader she has always been made me love her more. All the characters are extraordinary and I can't wait for more from Jeyn Roberts.

This book was awesome it was hard to put down. I really liked it more than dark inside. I looked up to see if there will be a third book but couldnt find anything. I really hope there is because it leaves you on a cliffhanger. If there isnt then it would be pointless to make this series. Its obvious that there should be a third book coming out.

I believe I enjoyed this book more than the first one in a way. The characters really seem to have grown a whole lot more. With Rage Within we get to see how life was for each of the characters before the Baggers came and now three months after the earthquake has hit. We still have the 5 P.O.V.'s and for me it still worked. We finally get to meet a character though he doesn't have his own chapter it is more along the lines of he is in the chapter of Mason's where you can tell he is up to no good. There is action and we finally get to see the humans fight back in some way before it was a lot of running and hiding. Even though in this book they are still hiding they are learning that they need to start fighting back or all will be lost. Aries is still a strong leader and has a lot going on around her. How she keeps going without losing her mind I have no clue but she does it well. They end up losing people, having people trick them and then a surprise person is saved at the end. I thought all hope was lost on this character as he was okay with being left behind. We are introduced to new characters that come into the lives of Micheal, Aries, Mason, and Clementine, we also get a few chapters of the mysterious p.o.v. Nothing. Also with this story we get to learn a bit more about how people have turned into the baggers but there is still some mystery surrounding it. I think the only issue I had with the book was the love triangle or square going on. Aries in book one had feelings for Jack, now she loves Jack like a brother. Aries also has feelings for Mason and Daniel until something happens between her and Daniel. Also what happened to have have Joy and Jack have a relationship? I feel in stories that are suppose to be the end of the world if you are going to have romance or crushes happening then you have to have them go throughout the story you just can not have them pop in out of the blue. It leaves you wondering when did the affections start. Overall enjoyable book I found myself reading non stop with this one, I hope there is a book three as I want to know what is going to happen with Mr. Leon and the baggers. Will Mason succumb to the darkness or see the light? What is up with Aries being on the radar of the baggers? So many questions that I need book three.

Had to leave a review on this one. "Dark Inside" easily became one of my favorite books after I read it, and I waited months for Rage Within to come out, my expectations high. This book went above and beyond everything I expected it to be.  The book is told from four points of view: Mason, Aries, Michael, and Clementine, just like the last one. However, alll of the characters have been brought together and are hiding away from the Baggers in a safe house. I enjoyed reading about the characters having to put aside their differences to work together to survive. One of my favorite things in the book is the character development. Mason was my least favorite to read about in the first book, but Jeyn Roberts developed him so much in this book that he instantly became one of my favorites. I also loved the new characters introuduced and, like I said, how the old characters were expanded upon. Not only were the characters developed more, but their relationships were, too. I felt Aries's pain when (Spoiler alert!) Nathan died, and I liked the new romantic feelings between Mason and Aries. I'm also curious to see what will happen between Daniel and Aries in the next book, considering that the book didn't really tell how Aries felt about Daniel in the end. Finally, the action was neverending. This book will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat and you won't be able to stop reading.

Still waiting for answers after reading Rage Within. I enjoyed the pre-quel, but the sequel was just "ok". I would probably buy the third book just to see if Ms Roberts answers the rage" question - "why are these people so angry & what made them this way". The book jumps around alot and can be confusing seeing as how you don't really know or care who the author's focused on. Hoping the next book is better?

Oof. Devastated. Uplifted. All of it. Everything I hoped for. More, really. Deft, thought provoking, illuminating, full of fragile hope and endless heartbreak. RAGE WITHIN picks up pretty much where DARK INSIDE leaves off, with Michael, Mason, Clem, and Aries (along with their small group of survivors) still figuring out how to stay alive in the new, Bagger-run world. As with the first installment of the series, the characters are believable and well-rounded, with honest motivations and the endless need to question what's right and what's wrong. I absolutely LOVED the author's decision to begin the novel with several snippets - some from our characters, some from strangers - of events that preceeded the apocalyptic earthquakes and emergence of the evil within humanity. It's terrifying, really, when events that we experience every day are described as the quiet precursors to a mass implosion of society. There are some new characters, all of which I enjoyed, but the pages written from Nothing's POV are still the ones that punch me in the gut, that twist my heart, and that whisper truths about people, what they're capable of - be it giving in to their desires or fighting them. While the rest of the novel exceeded expectations, the Nothing chapters blew me away. Again. I will say that when we learn Nothing's identity in RAGE WITHIN, I wasn't surprised. What makes Jeyn such a great writer, though, is that even though I had guessed correctly, the scene in which the characters learn who among them is a betrayer still made me sick to my stomach. He or She brings a new angle, a new idea to the DARK INSIDE story, one I'll be quite curious to follow in the coming installment. I've certainly made no secret of the fact that DARK INSIDE was my favorite genre YA of 2011, and RAGE WITHIN ranks in the same position among my 2012 reads. I love this series because it forces the reader to examine not only the world and its terrifying inhabitants in the book, but how they might relate to the one we live in, the people we live among.
