Description: This guide to the interpretation of heart and lung sounds in dogs and cats includes access to a website where users can listen to the sounds and view videos. The previous edition was published in 2006.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an introduction to heart and lung sounds. These are worthy objectives and the authors emphasize that users practice on as many animals as possible to build up their "mental library" of sounds. Presenting the material in print and online versions may be helpful to some readers, but the online version appears to have most of what users need so it is not clear if the book is required.
Audience: The audience appears to be veterinary students and new graduates, although this is not stated. The book also may be helpful for more experienced practitioners changing jobs (i.e., large animal practitioners needing a review of small animal medicine).
Features: The book covers heart sounds, murmurs, arrhythmias, and lung sounds in dogs and cats. There is a robust pre-test and post-test for each of the sections. The authors stress that taking the pre-test before listening/reading and then taking the post-test will highlight any deficiencies. This is a nice addition and should be helpful for most readers. Each chapter thoroughly covers the details of its subject (i.e., heart sounds) with text, diagrams, and schematics in addition to the audio link.
Assessment: The website with accompanying sounds is a very nice update. This package is a good addition to the library of veterinary students and new graduates and will go a long way toward increasing competence in auscultation.
