Reasoning from the Scriptures with Catholics by Ron Rhodes

Anyone interested in sharing the gospel with Catholic friends or understanding where members of that denomination stand on important points of theology will appreciate this thorough yet easy-to-use reference. Using the simple, step-by-step format applauded by readers in Rhodes' previous books, Reasoning from the Scriptures with Catholics covers many theological issues that divide Protestants and Catholics, including:

  • purgatory and indulgences
  • the reverence of Mary, mother of Jesus
  • papal infallibility
  • Catholic traditions
  • and much more

Each chapter examines a single Catholic belief or practice as taught in the Catholic Catechism and other major Catholic sources, provides biblical responses, and offers questions to help Catholics examine their church's readings. Pastors, teachers, and lay leaders will find this insightful guide a must-have tool for sharing the good news of salvation by faith alone with Catholic friends and family members.

After investigating some more of the beliefs of Catholics I picked up the Catechism to get to the source of Catholic teaching and was blown away by what I had found. I also investigated the early Church Fathers who were all Catholic and became even more convinced I needed to get back to the sacraments. What the Church teaches and what I thought the Church taught were two totally different things. I think this book, strange as it appears, led me on a journey I never expected but am overjoyed I investigated for myself. I was tired of jumping from one church to another all claiming to worship the right way. How can this be? 3 churches on ther same stret all claiming the other is wrong. Would Christ start a Church without giving it authority? ...even the gates of hell won't prevail against it.

Christians often feel as if they are locked in a war, a spiritual battle with the rest of the world. In these excellent resources, Mr. Rhodes addresses the major movements that face Protestant Christians. While he failed to convince the reviewer that Catholics would qualify as non Christian, the volume dealing with them is extremely instructive in learning about Catholic beliefs, which are often a mysterious thing to a non Catholic. Each book tackles the major and minor beliefs of the system addressed therein with respect and kindness. Rather than beating people over the head with a Bible, the reader learns how to minister gently to those they witness to. In the process, you learn a great deal about other views that in light of current events are timely and relevent. You might even learn a few things about Christianity itself that you did not know or did not understand well.
