About the Author

It could be said that her first breath was the inspiration that became the aspiration for her life’s work: to live with purpose. On Labor Day, September 6, in Knoxville, Tennessee, Sandra Kaye Mitchell-Woods became the firstborn daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Kincaid Mitchell. Little did they know that her being a firstborn was only the beginning of several other firsts that she would experience.
As time passed, family and friends who knew her believed that she was born with the ability to impact people’s lives through versatility, community activism, charitable work, and most importantly, through teaching and guiding school children while building a high-achieving school culture.
In a very real sense, her life behind the podium began in 1966. Ms. Mitchell-Woods was one of the first black students who integrated East High School in 1964. As a result of several positive factors, including her grades and speaking voice, she became the first black student to deliver a commencement address at a predominately white high school in Knoxville, Tennessee. After studying at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, she, and her husband moved to Iowa, earning a B.A. and an M.A. in Education from the University of Northern Iowa. These degrees were followed by a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) and Ed. S. in Educational Leadership, and further professional growth in Educational Leadership at Harvard University, Dr. Sandra Mitchell-Woods’ Ed.D. was earned at Trident International University following study at Nova Southeastern University.
It is of value to note that Dr. Mitchell-Woods joyfully blends her professional career choices with her interest and personal affiliations: walking, traveling, reading, classical piano music, creative writing, philanthropy, and curiosity thinking. Affiliations include Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Pi Lambda Theta Honor Society, Flo-Jacobson Initiative Board Member, Smiles 4 U Charitable Organization, Founder, Lion’s Club, The Book Review Club, and the Optimist Club.
Years of experience shaped lessons that caring, courage, confidence, compassion, and curiosity were essential for a passionate pursuit of success. Among Sandra Mitchell-Woods’ many legacies, one is her undertaking of leadership and advocacy. She always believed in trusting oneself and said,
