Overview

Seventeen-year-old Tracy Miller met the love of her life...thirty years after her own death.

Tracy was working at the House of Horrors at the Amazing Lands Theme Park when the fire broke out. Instead of running, she lost her life trying to save eleven-year-old Mack. Now thirty years have passed, and suddenly everything changes with the arrival of two new ghosts: a little girl named Ashley and a cute seventeen-year-old boy named Josh. Josh would do anything for Tracy, but can he help her let go of the past and accept his love?

RIDE OF YOUR LIFE is a bittersweet, romantic, YA ghost story that was inspired by a true event: the Great Adventure Haunted Castle fire, which killed eight teenagers in 1984. It is a fantasy novel about undying love, and it won third-place in Smart Writer's Write It Now (W.I.N.) contest in the YA category, which was judged by Alex Flinn, the author of BEASTLY and CLOAKED.

Hang on. Love can be as terrifying as a roller coaster, but it could also be the RIDE OF YOUR LIFE.

About the Author

Shevi Arnold loves writing, illustrating, and making people laugh-and she's been doing all three since 1987 when she started working as an editorial cartoonist for a newsweekly. She's also worked as a comics magazine editor, as an arts-and-entertainment writer specializing in comedy and children's entertainment, and as a consumer columnist. Nowadays, though, she enjoys writing (and sometimes illustrating) humorous fiction, fantasy and science fiction, mostly for children and young adults.

Shevi grew up in Philadelphia, and her family had a season pass to Great Adventure in the early 1980s. She was nineteen-years-old and studying overseas when a fellow college student asked her if she knew about the Great Adventure Haunted Castle fire. Eight teenagers had lost their lives. Like many, Shevi was shocked by the news. In her mind, she wanted to give that tragedy a happy ending. Ride of Your Life is the result.

Her previous books are Dan Quixote: Boy of Nuevo Jersey--a humorous novel for middle graders about individualism and friendship overcoming peer pressure and bullying--and Toren the Teller's Tale--a YA fantasy about the magic of storytelling and one girl's struggle to accept that magic within herself. Why My Love Life Sucks, the first in the Gilbert the Fixer, is a funny YA science-fantasy novel about the ultimate geek having to confront his ultimate fear--getting stuck with a gorgeous girl who wants to be his platonic best friend literally forever.

REVIEW: OH MY GOODNESS!!! This book was fantabulous! When I opened this book my first thought was, "My gosh, there is incredible detail in the first couple pages!" There was a map of the theme park, it broke down where the rides were and what part of the park it was located. I loved that the beginning of each chapter the words looked like a roller coaster. This book mad me feel emotion before I even read its first word. CHARACTERS: * Tracy- She died thirty years ago saving her now B.F.F Mack from a fire in the house of horrors. I felt bad for Tracy through most of the book she has taken care of everyone but herself. She seemed self loathing. But she didn't annoy me or make me want to yell. It had the total opposite effect on me, I want to care for her help her realize she was loved. * Mack-he to me was a pesky little brother. He acted as he did because he had a hard life. He never had someone to love him fully, until Tracy tryed to save him. Even though they died Tracy had saved him in a way. He now had someone to love and call family. *Josh- The boy who is sent to save Tracy from Tracy. He is what every girl could want. Loving and dedicated. Soft and hard. I don't know how to put my finger on it. He is a man in a boys body. I loved every character, they all had a back story and mushed together to create their family. I give this book five*****stars unbelievable detail. And a beautiful love story. QUOTES: " I'm scared." She said. " I know, but trust me. This is going to be great." They found two empty seats in the middle. The safety bars came down and locked them in place. The floor dropped away from under them. Their legs dangled down. He reached out and took her hand. "Get ready." He said. "Ready for what?"she asked. "The ride of your life." He replied. Tracy shifted into the side of Josh's body. He loved her so much. He loved her since the time before they met, when she was still just his dream. He loved her when she was happy, and when she was sad. He loved her when she liked being with him, and when she told him to go away.

Wow, this was a fantastic story! I really enjoyed it; the concept was compelling. The writing was very, very good; it all flowed well. There was good development within the characters, and I thought they were pretty much all likable. Tracy and Mack have been gone for thirty years, but still are connected to the Amusement Park, where they past on, but you read their reasons for staying. Josh and Ashley are the new ones at the Park, after they lose their lives, but something about them makes Tracy change, and you'll see if its for the best or not. What I thought was sweet, was the building of an instant attraction or longing that Tracy and Josh have for one another. Tracy tries all she can to resist this connection they seem to have, but Josh won't let her. What I also really liked, were the fun looking illustrations that greeted us into each new chapter, looking at an illustration of some ride at the Park. With reading this whole story, it definitely gave me the urge to want to go to an Amusement Park with friends, and it will do the same for you, and oh eat some delicious food :) I don't know what else to say, but I left this story with a good feeling, and I think you will to, so do read this novel; it's a perfect Summer Read!

Ride of Your Life was a cute and fun book to read. The cover immediately caught my eye; I LOVE roller coasters, and now I'm even more excited for summer than I already am! This is a perfect time of year to read this book.  I liked Tracy even though she takes care of everyone but herself. She made the decision to stay with Mack at the Amazing Land theme park rather than go into the light. She's only going to go when Mack is able to go, and so they hang around the park. It's been thirty years since they died, and with the way he aggravates her on purpose, they seem like they were brother and sister even before the accident.  Mack wasn't a likable character for me in the beginning, but once I delved into what his life was like when he was still alive, I understood him better. Plus he died when he was only eleven years old. He had so much life ahead of him - I felt sad he died so young. I'd probably be bitter and jaded, too.  I was sad for Ashley, too, and especially her mom. Though I didn't want any characters to be dead, I think Ashley and Josh made a wonderful addition to Tracy and Mack's little family. Ashley brought out a softer side of Tracy that I really liked seeing, and I think Josh did the same for Mack. Josh's love for Tracy was unwavering no matter how many times she tried to push him away. I'd love to have Josh in my life!  Ride of Your Life is more about emotions and living and dying rather than action and adventure, which I personally appreciated. I love stories exploring what it means to really and truly live. There were times I laughed, and times I shed a few tears. I would have added a fifth star except at times Tracy and Mack teaching the rules of being a ghost to Ashley and Josh didn't quite keep my attention. The story of these four characters was beautifully told, and I believe Arnold accomplished what she set out to do when writing this novel. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
