Shifters keep their friends close and their enemies closer in a shadowy world where the line between hunter and hunted thins, blurs, and finally shatters

Author's Note: Roman's Gold is the kickoff volume for the Underground Heat Trilogy. All three books are full length, futuristic shifter romances with happy-ever-after endings!

You can buy the books individually, or in the boxed set titled Underground Heat.

Once respected members of society, shifters are running for their lives. In a futuristic world where resources are scarce, Kate uses her human form to work as a sex surrogate. Furious at what looks a lot like genocide for her people, she joins the shifter underground.

Devon's been a cop for a long time. He has shifter blood, but not enough to change into anything, at least not until the police department insists on a series of infusions to make him better at tracking shifters so they can be imprisoned--or killed.

Devon's latest assignment is Kate. From the moment he sees her, he can't get her out of his mind. But she's the enemy he's sworn to eradicate. As he tracks her, the line between hunter and hunted explodes.

Against reason and wisdom, Kate and Devon defy the rules. If their passion doesn't save them, it'll doom them forever.

Roman’s Gold**** Great start to the series. Devon & Kate are a great couple, both doing everything they can to help others. The story has its funny moments and some sad so it definitely engages the emotion rollercoaster and yet it is action-packed. The shifters just want to be left alone and have the same rights as humans. They have an excellent, sophisticated underground system though and I hope to see this series eventually give them the freedom they deserve at least for those who want it.

This is the start of the Underground series....In a futuristic world where shifters aren't what they used to be. Once they were respected in society now they are hunted like animals because of shifter haters.. They have to hide from the Trackers whos senses have been infused so they can hunt them down more efficiently.. There is only one drawback, most of these trackers have a smidgen of shifter and the injections bring out the animal that lays dormant. While this is bad for the authorities, it is a plus for the shifters. Devon is one such tracker, still feeling the guilt of not being able to have save his shifter mother from being imprisoned thus causing her death, he is left with no choice but to continue work in law enforcement after being shunned by his family. Devon is tasked with watching Kate Roman a shifter, who works as a human surrogate as a cover for her work with the underground. When they both see each other the attraction is mutual, the passion of the mating together with the injections forces the shift on Devon for the first time. All the Trackers start to have side effects from the forced infusions and learn the reality of what the shifters really live. After being corralled by the higher ups, they revolt and thus the underground is infused with stronger more efficient members. This is the story of how the Trackers came to belong to the Underground. Let's not forget the hot passionate story of Kate and Devon.

This is the first book in the Underground Heat series. I have read multiple books from the author and once again she has written a great book. I had a hard time putting the book down. This book can be read as a standalone, but is open ended for the next book in the series. There is violence and hot steamy sex. Definitely 18+. This is a shifter book set in the future. Shifters were once respected and part of society. Now they are on the run from those out to kill them. Kate Roman is a mountain lion shifter and becomes part of the shifter underground to help other shifters escape. Devon Heartshorn is a cop on an elite task force and is part shifter (but not enough to shift or be imprisoned). The police department, through a series of infusions, enhance the shifter attributes in him so he is better at tracking shifters to either imprison or kill. Devon's latest assignment is Kate. He finds her but is attracted to her and can't turn her in. Kate senses someone watching her and sees Devon and she is attracted to him too. He engineers a way to see her and they can't keep their hands, or other body parts, apart. Her cat realises that Devon is their mate. The infusions that Devon, and the rest of the task force, took did more than just enhance his senses. While having sex with Kate he ends up spontaneously shifting for the first time. Kate helps him learn how to shift back to human form. He learns that all is not as it seemed. What will he do now? What about the task force? I love this book and look forward to reading more of this series!

Roman's Gold has just enough sci fi (hover cars and fancy watch gizmos that do everything) to help set the futuristic stage, but not so much that it takes away from the paranormal romance aspect.  Kate has been living in hiding for years - disguising her shifter heritage to save her life, and protect the underground shifter movement.  Devon is sent by the police to determine if she is a shifter or not, but he can't seem to complete the assignment - it seems like love at first sight.  When Devon realizes the injections that helped him track Kate down also boosted his shifter blood, he realizes he may be on the wrong side of this fight.  But it will be up to Kate to try and push him into changing sides. Kate is a fiesty little mountain lion (I love cat shifters) that hides refugees for the underground shifter movement.  The only thing I disliked about Kate (and also Devon) is that the beginning of the book has them having sex with other people.  While it is normal (they hadn't met yet) it just sits a little wrong when that happens, but I got over it when their sex was soooo much hotter. There is also some sex that happens while they are shifted.  Ann Gimpel handled this very well, and the scenes are written to show how powerful their love for each other really is. The story of the Underground Shifter Movement is fantastic.  As more and more shifters are imprisoned and their rights are stripped away for being "non-human" the shifters have decided to unite and try to fight back.  This goal is contantly hovering in the background driving the story forward with the romance helping it all along the way.

Roman’s Gold takes the reader on a journey of sexual awareness, yearning, and fulfillment. The passionate nature of Kate is very evident right in the beginning. Just the idea of her being a sexual surrogate sounds forbidden and beautiful at the same time. Kate is a shifter who is hiding right in the open. Shifters everywhere are being persecuted and forced to live in prisons that are pretty much concentration camps. She joined the shifter underground to help save as many of her people as she could. Being a shifter, Kate is very open about her desires and her sexuality. She is not shy or modest and wants a strong man who can tame not only her, but the beast that lurks inside of her. Devon wants Kate from the first time that he sees her. A primal urge that lives right below the surface of his skin beckons him to claim her, and he does not want to deny it. He is drowning in his desire for her. Does he give into his heart and body’s demands, or does he do the job that he was assigned? Devon and Kate are racing against time to save the shifters and show the world that they what they are doing is wrong. Will they be able to find what they need? A swoonworthy Alpha male, a beautiful and sexy shifter, and a love that defies all the odds, equals one exciting story that you will fall in love with, make demands of, and hunger for long into the night! I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Roman's Gold is an entertaining series starter that provides some intriguing parallels to current issues mirrored in its futuristic/sci-fi setting. Into a world where the air is toxic, people live in walled off cities, and food is rationed lives shifter Kate Roman who's been many things throughout her long-lived lifetime. She's currently a sex surrogate trying to keep a low profile as shifters are being rounded up by the government after losing their rights. Life has become extremely harsh for their kind which has her acting as part of an Underground Railroad to save others like her. Her deeds have made her a target and soon the sexy cop Devon is on her trail as she battles both her human and animal side to keep her attraction to him at bay. Kate is a strong and immensely likable character. She's highly sexualized, and not ashamed of it, due to her animal side which leads to numerous steamy sexual encounters, not with the hero early on either. Once she discovers her Mate though she's willing to fight to rescue him and bring him home which made me admire her all the more as she's no shrinking violet. She's a badass when need be! Devon's become a pariah in his own family due to his police work. Upon his mother's incarceration and death due to her shifter blood he's now seen as the enemy. As the government continues to overstep their bounds he starts to rebel in subtle ways towards his superiors as his sympathy towards shifters grows. Seeing Kate and discovering his intense attraction to her has made him even more caring towards shifters as he doesn't want harm to come to someone so beautiful and unique. His sexual obsession brings him closer to her but unbeknownst to him his superiors have been experimenting with him and other members of the task force under the guise of making them better hunters. It's in fact turned them into the things they've been taught to hate. It was a surprise seeing Devon shift and I felt sympathetic towards him as his entire life was now turned on end. He pulled away from Kate at first but quickly came to rely on her as his mentor and his guiding force. They connected not only on a human level but on an animal one as well which leads to their Mating. Their lives are soon in jeopardy with them on the run relying on shadowy figures to give them sanctuary. Enemies soon become allies as the shifter ranks swell and all out war is just on the horizon in this fast paced story that lays the groundwork for what promises to be an enthralling and super steamy series. Ms. Gimpel has created a vividly bleak world where the government has gotten out of control. People have been targeted for reasons beyond their control and I applaud their finally fighting back. The main characters are a great match who ooze sexual tension every time they're together. Their sexual interludes are HOT with them coupling in both human and animal form. I felt like we got to know quite a bit about Devon but Kate is still a mystery in some respects. Along with this strong-willed main couple comes a slew of likable secondary characters, both human and shifter, willing to fight for what's right. I'm greatly anticipating a return to this world and the continuing bloody war to save shifters.

Roman's Gold is a futuristic paranormal novel set in a dystopian North America where shape shifters have been outlawed and are being hunted by the government. The story is the first in the Underground Heat series by Ann Gimpel. The author packs action and a whole lot of sizzling hot sex into this fantastic novella. Cat shifters in particular are a personal favorite of mine, and mountain lion Kate Roman has all the makings of a feisty leading lady. By day, she works as a sex surrogate. By night, she acts as an operator for the shifter underground, helping persecuted shape shifters of all types escape from government prison camps. Kate is smart, courageous and resourceful. Ann Gimpel puts a new spin on shifters: human and animal are "joined" but retain separate and distinct identities. Human and animal share a telepathic link. Kate and her cat engage in some hilarious exchanges that really brings an added layer of humor to the story. Devon Heartshorn is a cop who hunts shifters for the government. He is half-Native American, and his mother was fifty percent shifter. He has received blood infusions to make him a better bloodhound by enhancing his natural senses. However, the injections happen to have additional side effects that soon turn Devon from the hunter to the hunted. Initially, Devon is something of a gray hero, because he has actively participated in helping the government round up shifters. However, he changes thanks to his attraction to Kate and tries to protect her prior to discovering the effect the injections are having on him. Kate and Devon share great chemistry. Their emotional bond is tender and compelling, and the sex scenes are highly erotic. One scene in particular, when the shifted cats continue to have sex, left me blinking in surprise, but mostly because it's not something I've encountered before even in paranormal erotica. (More, I believe, due to reticent publishers, than authors). The love scenes are detailed and tasteful. There are sex scenes involving the hero/heroine and others. Overall, the story doesn't delve too deeply into its futuristic setting, although, a couple things did throw me for the loop-d-loop. References to hover vehicles that seem to zoom through the sky like aircraft furrowed my brow. Likewise with the description of a concrete wall around Berkeley. (I'm a resident of the SF east bay so I'm intimately familiar with the urban sprawl that is the Oakland-Berkeley area and I have trouble envisioning a wall containing the city.) Aside from a couple little nit-picky things, I had no trouble becoming completely engrossed in the story and following it through to the exciting ending. Ann Gimpel has a smooth, strong writing style. Each of her characters possesses a distinct voice and she employs good pacing, mixing actions sequences with sex in a manner designed to keep things flowing. It seems like the government of Ann's world must have created a real problem for itself by injecting so many highly trained cops with shifter blood, so I'm looking forward to finding out what the future of the Underground Heat series holds! So if you're looking for a red hot paranormal erotica novel, look no further. Just make sure you've got a willing partner on standby... Or a really cold shower! I purchased my copy of Roman's Gold on Amazon. The author did not request a review.
