Santa Calls by William Joyce

Three kids venture to the North Pole to help Santa defeat an army of evil elves in this holiday classic from the brilliant mind that brought you The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore.

Art Atchinson Aimesworth—inventor, crime fighters, and all-around whiz kid—journeys north with his sister, Esther, and his pal Spaulding, by special invitation from Santa himself. Why did Santa call them to the North Pole? Art wants to know. But when Esther is taken by the Queen of the Dark Elves, Art must put his questions aside and save his sister.

This reissue of William Joyce’s epic Christmas adventure now comes complete with lift-the-flap letters from Santa himself!

This isn't your cuddly, hot-chocolate-warmth, Santa tale, but rather a fast-paced, high-flying adventure with tons of wondrous Christmas magic around every bend. Art is a boy in Texas, who is known for his adventurous spirit and talent in about everything. He has only one flaw, he likes to fight with his little sister. When the siblings and Art's best friend discover a mysterious box and find that Santa has called them to the North Pole, an action-filled adventure begins. The tale begins with Art, a true Texas-crime fighting hero already as a boy. The description and illustrations of this tough, slightly arrogant, and very Western kid start the book off with a clash to the winter-world to come. And it grabs kids right away and jerks them to pay attention. Slow is not a word to be found in these pages. The moment the kids get that box, it leads to a line of adventure which hits with explosion after explosion. There is mystery, thrills, magical wonder, edge-of-the-seat escapes, daring rescues, and, on top of it all, warmth. This is exactly the kind of Christmas story kids who love adventure and aren't ready to dive into snuggly emotions are going to enjoy. It makes a great read-aloud, especially for groups. However, I wouldn't recommend this for younger readers and see it more as a read for kids ages 5 to 7. The illustrations have a very traditional feel, which wakes a nice sense of an old-fashioned Christmas. There are lovely details, and every scene brings across the emotions and adventure nicely. While lovely, the traditional style holds an interesting clash to the very fast paced and thrill-filled adventure the kids experience. It's a mixture which demands attention and works. If you're looking for a different type of Christmas tale, which still holds on to a bit of traditional charm while packing in a fast-paced adventure to please action fans, this tale is it. Especially kids ages 5 to 7 are sure to stay attentive as this story is read-aloud to them, and they'll probably hit the playground and join in on similar adventures of their own imaginations. I received a complimentary copy and found the story so creepily-cute and still warm that I had to leave my honest thoughts.

Bought this for my grandson. My old copy had actual letters in the back cover. A little disappointed this version just had printed copies of the letters. Every Texas kid needs this story in their Christmas library.

We purchased our first copy many years ago (when there were two actual letters tucked into the last pages). We love this so much that we purchased two more this year so that all three of our children have their own copy. (All 3 are 20+) We love the beautiful illustrations and the wonderful purpose of the whole story. It is a story about sibling love.

My absolute favorite Christmas book., and I'm an adult! I bought it years ago because I love the gorgeous William Joyce illustrations, but the story makes me tear up every time I read it. I now give this to all of my friends for their kids & grandkids.

This book got good reviews, but I didn't find it sweet or that interesting. It was longer than it needed to be and the siblings are not nice to each other. I thought the story wasn't as well connected as it could have been. There seemed no reason for the characters to do what they did. While there was a little lesson learned, it just wasn't a strong story of family love. There are other books that do a much better job and make more sense. While the brother did help his sister in the end, I didn't get the connection as to how that will influence future behavior. I was disappointed.

I bought this book two months ago as a Christmas gift for our six-year-old nephew. Though he is a gifted reader, I knew the illustrations and the imaginative story would captivate him. I also knew the object lesson it creatively and gently shares would speak to his heart in regards to his four-year-old sister, who is spunky despite her diminutive size. Still, one doesn't need to have a sibling to appreciate this story. It speaks to everyone, coaxing our intentions to be more thoughtful and purposeful in our interactions with others within the playful storyline.

I should admit my bias for the artwork and fantastic storytelling of William Joyce. His work is truly a warm fuzzy! Its look and notions within each story capture the best of a time gone by: a time that is simpler, less complicated and dear to the hearts of many. This is essentially what makes "Santa Calls", and other works of William Joyce, timeless. The need for love, respect and thoughtfulness from others is something that is etched on the hearts of us all. Being mindful to freely give these things not just at Christmastime, but anytime, is what makes this book a wonderful gift for any child or child-at-heart.

I saw this book at the library where I work and I fell in love (I'm 50 mind you). I instantly bought a copy for my nephew, who would be Art if he could only get the family to play along. It's a wonderful story and the art work is just perfect. Anyone who loves adventure, and wished they'd been the kids in all those adventure novels, this is the book for you. Whatever your age.

This is without a doubt my favorite kids of all ages book. I have loved it since my first reading at Christmas 10 years ago. I have purchased it as a gift for every child I know and recommended it to adults, who eventually admit they love it too.

A truly wonderful Christmas story. Summoned by Santa for unknown reasons, Art Aimesworth, his sister Ester, and his friend Spaulding embark on a dangerous and exciting mission to the North Pole. Filled with the wonderful fantasies of childhood and beautifully illustrated by Wm. Joyce, the story evokes the true spirit of Christmas: love -- especially of a brother and sister. A rare jewel of a book.

This is a great story. The illustrations are absolutely delightful. It is a story your kids (and you) will enjoy christmas after christmas, unless your kids are like my kids, who love to read christmas books, and especially this book, year around. It deserves more stars than are possible here. You will not be sorry you purchased this fun book.

I pack this book away each year with our Christmas trimmings and each year, when we're done decorating the tree, I sit with my children to read this beloved story. I cry everytime. I love this book.
