A captivating inside look at being an eye surgeon. I didn’t know that eye surgeries are the most common operations in the world, or that procedures like cataract surgery and LASIK were so “simple” – quick and effective. The stories of the long-suffering men who invented today’s modern techniques are heart-rending and unforgettable. Thank goodness they persevered to the benefit of us all. Just as unforgettable is the way the author reveals what life as a surgeon is like – how he makes the tough decisions, how he deals with problems mid-surgery that seem impossible to solve, how doctors view getting sued and their level of income – all of it is laid out for the layperson to see and understand. This book was excellent, I had trouble putting it down.

This is a fascinating book for anyone who has ever seen an eye doctor or was curious about eye problems.  The author describes what performing eye surgery is really like.  I have been thinking about having LASIK surgery, so when I was reading about the first time this doctor performed LASIK on a patient, and explained everything he did and everything he was worried about, I thought it was really cool.  The book also includes many stories of eye doctors who invented things, like the artificial lens, the modern technique of doing cataract surgery, LASIK surgery.  I found these stories really compelling.  Each of these “heroes” went up against overwhelming odds, faced terrible opposition.  I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in medicine or medical history.

Dr. Lam's Saving Sight is one of the most informative books I've read in a very long time. But not only that, it's story "behind the mask" as he puts it. The reflections of an astute, highly acclaimed eye surgeon who not only knows what he's talking about but also knows how to tell a good story. I cried twice reading this book -- once in the Louis Braille narrative and again when Dr. Lam was relating one of his behind the mask stories about a young girl who is inexplicably losing her vision.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book!  Andrew Lam is a gifted story teller  -- a modern day Oliver Sacks.  He has a talent for bringing history to life.   Wish there were more books like this!

This is a fascinating book about an eye surgeon's feelings and thoughts about his patients.  Having several eye problems myself, I never  gave a thought to what the doctor was thinking.  Dr. Lam has proven to be a very caring and sympathetic person as well as an outstanding surgeon.  It was fascinating to learn about the men that developed the machines that make so many eye surgeries possible.   I am so glad  I read it!

I bought multiple copies of this book for the surgeons in my life. An awesome read for anyone in the medical field or anyone interested in medicine's past or present.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, especially learning the background stories of how ophthalmologists developed their Big Idea. There was an element of luck...being in the right situation, but there was also a mental preparedness to be able to see how an idea could be applied. This thought encourages me as I look for my Big Idea. The author describes events in the manner that is easiest for me to process...through story. The engaging style in which the book is written makes the read extremely easy. The controversy surrounding the early implementation of equipment and techniques that are now the standard-of-care surprised and fascinated me. I enjoyed Saving Sight so much that I've purchased more books for my friends. One of the books will go to a medical student considering ophthalmology. Knowing the history of the field will help her appreciate it and will also arm her for her interviews!

Saving Sight is an introduction to the beauty and complexity of the human eye.  Most people who have not suffered from illnesses of the eye take normal eye function for granted.  Have you ever thought of your eye as being dead or being alive? Dr. Lam has a unique perspective as an ophthalmologist and historian.  However, this is anything but a dry textbook of ophthalmology.  The most engaging parts were the historical accounts of ophthalmological advances, described in the context of real-life cases Dr. Lam saw.  These medical breakthroughs did not simply happen in a research laboratory but were significantly shaped by world events, such as World War II and the Depression.  Dr. Lam is honest and vulnerable about his own journey to become a skilled surgeon.  He also comments on the realities of practicing medicine today and how doctors and patients make treatment decisions.  Saving Sight is an entertaining and worthwhile read!

Combines the fascinating struggles of the physicians who made the major contributions to modern ophthalmology with a surprisingly frank telling of the training experiences of an eye surgeon. These two aspects are intertwined in an lively manner. Despite the cliche about standing on the shoulder of giants, the stories in this book illustrate the importance of  insight and persistence in the advance of science and medicine.
