Iris Marlowe has spent ten years as the best understudy in Chicago: good enough to go on, never good enough to be cast. Then the Calloway Theatre offers her the understudy slot for Vivienne Cross in The Vigil, a production with a history nobody will discuss. Iris takes it. But something is wrong at the Calloway, and the closer Iris gets to the stage, the clearer it becomes that understudies at this theatre have a way of going on permanently.
