Secrets by Lindsay McKenna

Novella: Darkness surrounded him. Could love rescue him?

Mark Reuss' childhood was a living hell. The only bright spot in his life during those dark days was his best friend, Mattie Lockwood. Her beauty and spirit called out to him, but he didn't want to drag her down into the gloom his life had become. So when he graduated high school, he joined the Marine Corps and left his past--and Mattie--behind.

Or so he thought. Mark never forgot Mattie, or stopped wanting her. Now he's back in town, ready to face his demons and make a life with her. But before he can set his plans in motion, Mark must suddenly disappear once again, but it means keeping secrets from Mattie. Will he once again have to let go of the woman he loves?

Although this is a novella that is part of the Delos series written by Lindsay McKenna, it is about two people who are (what Ms. McKenna calls) secondary characters from other stories. Mattie Lockwood is Wyatt Lockwood’s (whose story Tangled Pursuit and sequel Unbound Pursuit were previous books in the Delos Series) sister and Mark Reuss is a man who grew up with the Lockwoods but seems to have taken a “wrong turn” after his military career. It’s not that you have to read the Delos series to know what is going on, but I SO enjoy this series of books and you will too. And you get to know some background as well. I won’t recap the story as the author does it better than I ever could but know that it is heartwarming, heart-wrenching, and sometimes nail-biting…but so worth the read. There is much love between Mattie and Mark; they just have to get through a very long rough patch in order to get to their HEA. I am always up to read more about this group of people and I highly recommend this story, and all the others, in the Delos series.
