Shadow's Edge (Night Prowler Series #1) by J. T. Geissinger

2013 winner FF&P's Prism Award for Published Authors—Best First Book

Deep within the primeval forests of southern England, a race of beautiful, savage shape-shifters lives hidden from the everyday world. Bound together by ancient bloodlines and a ruthless code of secrecy that punishes traitors with death, the Ikati send their leader Leander on a mission to capture one raised outside the tribe before she can expose their secret. When Leander tracks the unsuspecting outsider to Southern California, the hardened warrior is prepared for a fight—but not for the effect the sensual young beauty has on his heart.

Jenna spent her childhood in hiding, on the run from someone—or something—her parents refused to discuss. She trusts no one, not since her father’s mysterious disappearance, not since her mother’s sudden death, and definitely not since she began exhibiting strange, superhuman abilities. When handsome, enigmatic Leander appears, promising answers to the mysteries that shroud her past, she knows she shouldn’t trust him either. But their connection is undeniable, and as powerful as the enemy hell-bent on destroying every one of their kind…

Night Prowler Book One Jenna has been running her whole life, but when she decides to finally stop she is determined to stay. Leander, Christian and Morgan must convince Jenna to join their colony now that she is able to shift, to adhere to the shifters' laws. However, Jenna's powers are greater than even her mate had believed. Jenna could be the key to finding and saving the colony's missing member before it is too late. If you're looking for a new kind of shifter, this story is for you!

Jenna had been running for years, but until they came for her she had no idea whom she was running from. Her mother was human-her father Ikati. Their relationship was forbidden, and her father was branded a traitor among his kind. Her father was killed when she was a young girl, and her mother never told her exactly who and what her father was or what had happened to him before she also died. Jenna had special abilities that she kept hidden from everyone so she didn't stand out, but these abilities were normal among the Ikati. Leander is the alpha of his people and was sent to find Jenna to see if she had any of the gifts the Ikati had, including the ability to shift into a panther. What he found was not only did she have them, but that she was so much more. However, once he told Jenna what really happened to her father, he would have to fight to keep her with the Ikati and with him. And things become dangerous when the Ikatis' enemies start hunting them. I really enjoyed this book. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. The author has a wonderful way with words and I really liked the storyline. Shadow's Edge is the first one in a series and I look forward to reading more about the Ikati and what happens next with their enemies. * I was given a copy of this book by the author for an honest review.

I received the ebook from the author for an honest review. Growing up, Jenna and her family constantly moved across the world. One day, her father disappeared. Her mother went into a downward spiral. Always telling Jenna to be on the watch and run if she needed to. One day, it all changed. When Jenna went to the grocery, her skin started tingling... Then they were there... Who are they? What do they want. Leander promised that he would answer all her questions if she would come with him. Jenna really wanted answers. Jenna finds out more than she anticipated, her father's death and that what her role might be in her father's "family". I really enjoyed this story. There were lots of twists and turns. Love, betrayal and finding oneself.

Great start to a this series. This is a story of supernatural beings that have existed since time was so much different. The Ikati are a special breed of panthers that have been hunted and forced to live in secret to save their race. They have laws their people must follow to maintain that secrecy and keep them safe from the Expurgari who are out to eliminate every one of them from this earth. One of the laws they must follow is they are never allowed to marry humans or have children with them. One of their past alpha's broke that law and they have been watching the daughter from that union. Jenna grew up all her life on the run and knowing she was different but never knowing what made her different. Leander was sent to bring her in before her birthday since she risked shifting and exposing herself. Jenna was not happy with that but needed answers to all the questions and the only way she would get those answers was to go back to Leander's home. Leander knows there is something about Jenna that makes her different to him but it takes him a while to realize just what that is. The love story between them is gripping and labored but once they figure it out is becomes so much more than they both expected. Both Leander and Jenna are faced with trying to work through their issues and also facing danger and betrayal within the Ikati to rescue Leander's sister and ultimately Jenna. The author did a great job with the storyline and bringing these characters to life. Leander is the alpha and it's his duty to do everything within his power to protect his people but he also will do anything to protect Jenna. I loved this story and the world the author has created. Highly recommend this book. I was given a copy of this book for an honest review.

I had a very hard time putting this book down. While I enjoy reading about various things my favorite still lies with fantasy. I loved the story line and the way it was put together. Leander and Jenna had a very unique way with each other. One minute you think they are going to kill each other and the next they are making love in a closet. They are hard headed and strong willed. I loved the way they held everything together at the last minute with the understanding Leander has for her where she finds it hard to believe someone could actually love her for her. Always being told to run and hide. It's hard to trust the feelings you start to have. I really enjoyed this Novel and I Highly recommend it for those who love fantasy and fiction. However it isn't for young children. And parents should know that the love stories are very graphic so if you plan on letting your teenager read this just know that.

I really, really enjoyed this story! The mythology is unique and creative, and the characters are compelling. Leander is a devoted leader and more sentimental than I would’ve guessed. Jenna is intelligent and is stronger than she first appears. All the characters have such depth, you find yourself so invested that while you’re rooting for the hero and heroine, you want to cry for some of the secondary characters knowing what kind of toll everything is taking on them too. My only complaints are that I would’ve liked to see more panther-shifted time, but maybe that’s just my cat-lover showing, and that Leander and Jenna are both so connected, yet conflicted and they get too stubborn for their own good on occasion. Then again, what romance book couple doesn’t? Truth be told, there’s no real complaint from me. The book is well written, well paced, and has me anxious to know if/when there will be another installment. The writing style reminds me of Jacqueline Frank, so I think any fan of her work will enjoy JT Geissinger’s!
