Overview

Shark-obsessed Orly spends every summer with her family on the coast.

This year her parents have signed her up for sailing lessons, hoping to teach her some water safety while they're busy with her baby brother. Orly is excited to be on the water, but she has other ideas about how she’s going to spend her time there: rather than learning to tie knots and batten down the hatches, she's going to use her tablet to track Delta, a great white shark known to frequent the area. Orly’s misplaced enthusiasm repeatedly gets her in hot water with her instructor. Can Orly redeem herself with her sailing crew when she has a chance to use her shark-tracking skills to save some actual wildlife in danger?

About the Author

Jeff Szpirglas is the author of several works for young people, including the horror collections Tales from Beyond the Brain and Tales from the Fringes of Fear. He is also the co-author, with Danielle Saint-Onge, of a number of Orca Echoes titles, including Shark Bait!, X Marks the Spot and Messy Miranda. Jeff has worked at CTV and was an editor at Chirp, Chickadee and Owl magazines. In his spare time, he teaches grade school. Jeff lives with his family in Kitchener, Ontario.

Danielle Saint-Onge has a master's degree in social anthropology and is an advocate for equity in the classroom. She teaches in classrooms with students of diverse cultural backgrounds. Danielle is the co-author of Messy Miranda, X Marks the Spot and Something's Fishy all in the Orca Echoes line. Danielle lives in Kitchener, Ontario.

Dave Whamond is an award-winning illustrator and cartoonist of over 30 books. He won the Blue Spruce award for both My Think-a-ma-jink and Oddrey as well as the Silver Birch award for Secret Agent Y.O.U. His work has appeared in publications such as Wall Street Journal, OWL, MacLeans, Reader’s Digest and National Geographic. Dave lives in Calgary.

Gr 2–4—Orly loves sharks. Every year, she and her family go to the seaside to visit her grandmother, but she's never seen a real shark. This year, Delta the infamous great white shark is reported to be in the area, and Orly can't wait to get wet. There's just one problem: Her parents have signed her up for sailing lessons. At first, sailing seems like it could be fun—but her instructor, Dave, doesn't believe Orly when she says there is a shark in the area. Ben, her classmate, is squeamish at the thought of sharks. Her new friend, Dean, shares her interest. One day while out on the water, Delta is in close proximity to Orly's sailboat. Will Orly get to see her first shark? Whamond's eye-catching illustrations are detailed and complement the text well. The prose and plot are simple enough for reluctant readers, but engaging enough to hold their interest. VERDICT Readers who like realistic fiction, sharks, ocean science, and friendship stories will enjoy this pleasant title.—Kira Moody, Salt Lake County Lib. Svcs.
