Overview

In the busyness of life, it's easy to get distracted and disconnected from the many promises God has made about who he is, the strength we find in him, and the abundance of spiritual tools, abilities, and assets we have at our disposal. These are not necessarily things we have to search out to acquire--they already exist within us. And Dean Del Sesto wants to help you access them every day.

With hard-hitting truths, memorable quotes, and powerful perspective shifts, Del Sesto helps you connect (or reconnect) at a deeper level to the power, potential, and purpose you already have so that you can live your life with greater freedom, resilience, and wisdom. Perfect for business professionals on the go, the busy student, the active parent, and anyone who needs a boost of spiritual strength at any time, this book promises to help you live your life from an internal resolve rather than in reaction to your external circumstances.

I enjoyed reading through this book. You can bounce around or read it cover to cover. Each principle begins with a quote and a scripture verse and ends with a question or two to help you move the principle from words on a page to real life application - if you choose to. I found many of the principles to be very applicable and challenging. Following through on those challenges have proved to be very fruitful and rewarding. Loneliness in church, finding one's place in church, and the importance of maintaining balance were some that stand out to me right now. It can be used as a devotional, but I don't think that was the intent. Scripture is used but only as a guide, not as the core teaching. It's a great book that everyone would find use and benefit from. I received a copy of this book for free from Revell in exchange for an honest review.

“It’s ironic that we trust God for our eternity but often question whether he’ll handle the day-to-day issues,” Dean DelSesto, “Shift Your Thinking for a Deeper Faith.” This book immediately grabbled my attention. Who doesn’t want to “strengthen your relationship with God, others, and yourself” as the subtitle promises? The Introduction is convicting and Scripturally bound, laying the groundwork for the 99 tips to follow. In tip #18, DelSesto addresses “Resilience in the Face of Betrayal,” encouraging readers, “With a clear understanding of who the culprit for sin really is, we will see the potential of others in Christ.” Each tip contains quotable content, applicable Scripture, and a main takeaway. For tip #41, “The Decision to Doubt,” DelSesto writes, “Although the prison of our mind has no lock, walls, or fences, we are held captive by the constraint of our beliefs.” This book meets readers in the midst of everyday life, with practical tips that will both convict change and inspire a fresh new way of approaching the mundane challenges of relationships. “The Question,” at the end of each tip challenges readers to apply it to their own lives in depth. “Who in my life do I tend to avoid that I could practice love on?
“ DelSesto asks readers at the end of tip #62, “Love Universally.” I recommend this book to anyone looking for an easy way to take inventory on the relationships in their lives. It can easily be read all at once, or in tandem with other projects. In fact, applying one or two tips a day is probably more practical than digesting all 99 at once. “Give voice to the things of your heart: an audible, intentional, and yes, even LOUD voice!!!” Dean DelSesto, “Shift Your Thinking for a Deeper Faith.” (I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.)

“Shift your thinking for a deeper faith: 99 ways to strengthen your relationship with God, others, and yourself” is the first book that I have read by the author, Dean Del Sesto. Each chapter can be read independently or read from chapter one. The author starts each chapter with a Bible verse and ends with a question to get the reader thinking about how to apply The author mentioned that the book can be read out of order or in the traditional sense. It's ironic that we trust God for our eternity but often question whether he'll handle the day to day issues we contend with in our life. “Shift your thinking for a deeper faith: 99 ways to strengthen your relationship with God,” others and yourself” is more of a devotional to improve our walk with God and relationships. The author encourages us to shift our thinking and starts each chapter with a bible verse and ends with a thought-provoking question. I have a hard time reading just one chapter a day but enjoyed the challenge of each question. The new believer would benefit from reading “Shift your Thinking.” I received the book from Revell Publishing in exchange for an honest opinion. All opinions are my own.

This easy-to-read book encourages us to look deeper at our struggles in life, how to accept our own prejudices and become aware of what is holding us back from loving others and ourselves. Del Sesto isn’t preaching at readers but offering examples from the Bible as well as real-life to give us a different perspective. There are 99 chapters, but each is just a page or two covering life balance, opportunities, relationships, faith, family, time, sin, and using our gifts just to name a few. Because the chapters are short, you can tackle a couple of chapters a week and give yourself time to reflect on those themes before moving on. In a year you would have covered the whole book and hopefully have a new perspective on life and your faith. Each chapter offers a Bible verse, things to think about and a question to ask yourself for reflection on the topic. One chapter that I have implemented is “Prayer without Distraction”. I’ve been intentionally praying for others and purposely setting my phone down and ignoring all distractions to pray. It may sound like a simple and obvious thing, but it has forced me to really connect to God in prayer. Other chapters that I found helpful include “Releasing Tension with Others”, “Modeling Christ to Others”, and “Seeing Offenses as Beauty”. Each of these asks us to check our own judgments, release the offenses that make us tense or angry or annoyed, and remember we are all God’s people. There is something to learn from others and we are in control of how we react to situations and people. Del Sesto’s approach is laid-back and yet convicting. It’s easy to ignore the messages God is sending us through situations in our lives, but many times those situations can be faith builders. Recognizing our own assets and accepting God’s grace and then sharing it with others can help us live a better life as one of God’s people.

It's ironic that we trust God for our eternity but often question whether he'll handle the day to day issues we contend with in our life. (p. 10) Author Dean Del Sesto has written a motivational book to help us all strengthen and deepen our faith and to improve our relationships. As he suggests 99 ways to "shift our thinking" he shares Bible scripture, motivational thoughts, and a question at the end of each topic to spur more thinking. Some of the topics include our Christian witness, our relationship with family and others, and our true understanding of what God has done for us! I recommend Shift Your Thinking For a Deeper Faith to all who want to increase their awareness of both God and others and to improve their Christian witness. I wouldn't call this a devotional but I believe that it is a book to read slowly and then read again! I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell Publishing and I am voluntarily sharing my honest thoughts in this review.

Dean Del Sesto is a prominent author who's written several best sellers that include Shift Your Thinking for Success, Shift Points, and A Shift a Day for Your Best Year Yet. I would have to say after reading his latest book Shift Your Thinking for a Deeper Faith he's hitting notes that make it look the former way of living life in sinfulness and being and feeling defeated are things of the past. A new life in Christ means the person is transformed from the inside out and lives a victorious life even against the odds. So a big point to consider is who hasn't seen a rose or any kind of flower blooming in a hot and scorching sun and hasn't been amazed by that? It's because the roots of that flower go so deep that it's found a source of life to keep it blooming continuously! The truly converted person in Christ, the actual Christian is such a person as this. Harsh daily winds of life, fierce and strong opposition make this person thrive and survive as if it's with ease. What's the point to Dean Del Sesto's book? I've made a partial list of ninety-nine things he goes over in this book and they are that a Christian can have: Balance in Life Be in ceaseless, loving prayers Living life free of the power of sin Blessings from adversity Awareness towards others as well as opportunities Peace making abilties an ability to keep their word despite the cost and circumstances and so much more great biblical advice And that's the biggest claim Dean Del Sesto can make with this book. It's true the Bible doesn't actually need a companion tool, but if there was ever one Del Sesto makes sure that what he has in this two hundred ninety-six paged book has the best of God's word available to us! In other words Dean Del Sesto does an amazing job writing about how the Christ-follower can have God's grace and mercy in such great abundance it seems they are living better. And honestly we can! I received a complimentary copy of this book for a fair and honest review from Revell.

SHIFT YOUR THINKING FOR A DEEPER FAITH is a very confusing book. I was expecting something more like a previous book of his, but this is possibly a wannabe-but-failure-as-a-devotional with a random scriptural reference, no prayers, just a statement, a few thoughts about how it might relate to the theme of the book, and a question. Such as: > Move at the speed of awareness. > Everyone has gifts. Not everyone chooses to strengthen their gifts. > Profanity is nothing more than a momentary lapse in conversational creativity.. > If you want to accelerate your Christian maturity, stay perfectly still. Wise thoughts all, but for me, it doesn't work as the basis for a devotional. Now maybe I'm wrong and it's not intended to be a devotional. Maybe its intended to show how quotes *could* strengthen your Christian life. Whatever the case, the book is interesting, even if I'm not sure what to think of it, and it is definitely worth reading and pondering. A reader could take it much deeper with a good commentary, the Bible, and God's wisdom if they wanted and it could be a great jumping off point for a small group Bible study (if the leader takes time to prepare in advance). I was given a copy free. All opinions are my own.
