SIMPLCIUS SIMPLICISSIMUS is the picaresque tale of the young German boy, Simplicius, growing up in the Holy Roman Empire during the Thirty-Years War. Born to an illiterate peasant family, he is kidnapped by marauding soldiers and eventually becomes a soldier of fortune, joining the armies of both warring sides and switching allegiances as fortune and need dictates. His life is a series of adventures and misadventures, fighting, whoring, and marauding in search of loot and glory.

About the Author

Hans Jakob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen (1621-1676) was a German writer. Born during the Thirty-Years War, von Grimmelshausen was kidnapped by Hessian soldiers and eventually became a soldier himself. He later adapted many of his experiences to his picaresque novel SIMPLCIUS SIMPLICISSIMUS.
