Air Command pilot Nova Whiteside is assigned to a remote outpost to guard the construction of a new tethered orbiter, Skyranch Twelve, against rebel sabotage. The difference between the well-ordered Union air fields and this dusty garrison is made painfully clear when she runs afoul a brutal commander of ground troops.

When she is trapped behind enemy lines in a bloody uprising she meets Djari, a civilian whose trust in the governing Union is shattered by what he has witnessed.

Aboard the elegant new space station not all runs according to protocol and she soon suspects that more than farming is being done up there. When she uncovers the treacherous and illicit schemes taking place, it seems that local riots are the least of their troubles.

About the Author

Living in Canada, it is inevitable that those who lack enthusiasm for snow-related activities tend to stay indoors for a good portion of the year.Thank goodness for computers. I became a web developer and eventually authored some text books about HTML and CSS, pleasantly surprised when they were picked up at the college level. But I've always loved fantasy worlds and writing about what might be possible, given a certain suspension of disbelief and a rude assault upon the laws of physics.Since I've always suspected that there is far too much gravity on this planet, I tend to take my people to other worlds.Coming soon: an unabashedly cheesy space opera and another case of genetic malfeasance.

I really enjoyed this story. The characters are believable and it's a great read. Looking forward to reading the rest of the Series.

This book was a breath of fresh air--I've never before found a free book for futuristic sci-fi. This book has other lifeforms besides humans, kind of like Star Wars.

I really enjoy SciFi and this book did not let me down. Good action and good character development. I had a hard time putting it down. I look forward to the next installment.

Quick, fun, read. Sizzling space opera with plot twists and a gutsy, likable lead character. Looking forward to next one.

30 pages in and nearly the entirety consists of nothing more than a feminist caricature of the military, in which all males verbally harass and physically assault the protagonist (even uses the "boys will be boys" and "asking for it" lines that only feminists actually use in their stories, never by anyone in real life), complete with a visit from the commander offering to trade sex for protection. It semsto be the only thing the book has to talk about, and it was impossible to believe, especially having served in the US Air Force. It seems a classic example of what the author wishes would happen, to justify their misandry. When it's not making out all men to be rapists, it does a poor job with its military action. We start off in the middle of an op, with poor communications discipline, unnecessary exposition on the planet and enemy, and leave out any real exposition on the craft being flown or anything else relevant at the time. Worse, the action doesn't even make sense. At one point the protagonist disables her neural interface (which, according to the book itself, makes the plane react instantly to her thoughts, like an extension of her body) in order to take manual control to land in unstable terrain; there's no logical reason to do this, as it could only make such a landing harder, and the aircraft was undamaged. The calls made were rrational, the details poorly fleshed out. I stopped reading after the commander propositioned the protagonist, as it became clear this book isn't really a sci-fi action story, but is little more than some child on tumblr blogging their rape fantasies. Your time would be better spent on the dramatic reading of My Immortal on YouTube (widely regarded as the worst fan fiction ever written); at least that's funny.

Absolutely fantastic - this is a GREAT read - a book that was hard to put down. I will definitely be reading more from this author.

Good heroine and decent story although like most adventure tales it is filled with unbelievable escapes too many times. Not sure i would pay much to read any of the author's follow-on books but it is okay as a quick read.

Nova is a fairly likeable if a little bland. The story line is good but I could see the plot twist from a mile away. Enjoyed it anyway.

Fun character. She has something to prove and put on a world of people that simple oppose her due to envy or simply resentful of what they fear or did not earn.
