About the Author

Robert Nehls has been a story-teller a good share of his life, mostly in the form of poetry. Being a welder for over forty years gave him a great deal of time to think as he lived under his welding hood. The light of the arc led to numerous characters and stories ending up in poems that have been presented in a variety of publications as well as many local newspapers of places he has lived.
Robert and his wife Stevi live in Livingston, Montana, and are happy to call it home. Montana is where Robert began to love and admire prairie dogs. One day he looked in his rearview mirror and saw a prairie dog that had darted in front of his car tumble to the other side of the road. He smiled and asked himself, what if? In that moment Stanley came to life and the adventure began.

Eric Castleman’s captivating illustrations bring each story to life with rich detail and energy, drawing young readers. His artwork beautifully captures the landscapes, action, and emotions of each story, making them both engaging and immersive. In addition to The Fire Truck That Could Fly and The Spy That Could Fly, he also illustrated Stanley: A Prairie Dog’s Tale, Book Two: Family, Friends, and Unfriendly Foes, another beloved Sweetgrass Books title.
