Overview

Go “storm chasing” through the pages of the greatest Book ever written! What storm has blown into your circumstances? Are you—or someone you love—suffering from the trauma of plans that have been washed away, relationships that have been uprooted, or security that has been devastated? Many believers have been known to ask, “God, where are You in this storm?” or, “Lord, did You send this storm into my life?” Just what does a believer do during a stormy season? StormProof: Weathering Life’s Tough Times tackles these and other tumultuous questions.
Author Carol McLeod is a storm survivor—more than that, a victor—over infertility, depression, and cancer. She understands the spiritual, emotional, and physical challenges of the trials we face in our lives. A gifted Bible teacher, she provides “life preservers” of hope and faith through the eternal, practical wisdom found only in God’s Word.
By examining key storms in the Bible, and the lives of those affected by them, Carol guides you to uncommon comfort for your own storms, offering the shelter of hope, joy, and faith. In StormProof, you will step out of the boat to walk the waves with Peter, knowing that Jesus always comes to be with you in the midst of your storms; you will be rocked aboard a wind-driven ship with the apostle Paul, in danger of being smashed against the rocks, but be preserved by God’s power; you will watch the gathering storm clouds with Noah, holding on to faith in God’s purposes. You will also experience Jonah’s self-inflicted tempest while affirming God’s unconditional love, sit in silence with Job and ponder his questions about the greatest storm of testing, and huddle with the disciples as their boat is swamped by surging waves—only to hear Jesus’s eternal words, “Peace, be still.” You will also hear about storms of harsh circumstances that others from recent history have encountered and overcome.
Storms are common in every season of life. Yet, for a believer in Christ, the damage such storms cause can be contained, depending on how we navigate their tumultuous waves. There is a way—a triumphant way—to encounter the fierce gales of life and then exit the tempests with strength and resilience. There is a definitive way to walk through the most devastating of circumstantial tornadoes and emerge with grace, empowered for the future. There is a way to be StormProof.

Storm Proof, Weathering Life’s Tough Times, by author Carol McLeod is a Christian Living book for women. I have earmarked this as a great gift book. We all go through or have been through storms. That is just life. The difference is how we handle the journey and knowing we are not alone. Author McLeod has written an encouraging, biblically based, God glorifying, gem of a book on how to ride out the storms of one’s life and come out closer to God. Using personal stories and scriptural ones, she explains her thoughts. I loved her easy way of making her point. She has a nice style of writing and kept my interest throughout the entire book. It was easy to understand and I would nod my head in agreement in many places. The author has provided pearls of wisdom, inspiration, hope, and let readers know they aren’t alone in their struggles. She is upbeat and positive. The stories she shares from the Bible were familiar but her view on the lessons learned is refreshing and gave me something to ponder. There are 256 pages divided into twenty-six chapters in this helpful book. It would be a wonderful tool for a reading group. Haven’t we all gone through storms? There is a lot of material to discuss that would help any and every one. I definitely recommend this book. It is spectacular. Faith filled, it will give your soul some sustenance. I found a whole new mindset as I readjusted my thoughts on the storms of life. I rate it 5 out of 5 stars. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my own opinions.

I know I have weathered many storms in my life. There were times I wasn't sure if I would survive, but with God's help I became stronger and more dependent on Him. Today as I read this book, I am faced with the biggest storm I have ever had. It has taken me by surprise and at times I'm not sure I can go on. God knew just what I needed and provided this book at the right time for me. From the beginning of the book I was encouraged by reading, " Not only does a storm have the power to introduce us to God, but it also has the capacity to introduce us to ourselves!" I have always said that I would not change a thing I went through because it made me stronger. It has also helped me to share my story with others to help them understand that God never leaves us. I loved the story about Jesus grieving for his friend who had just been murdered. Like many of us, He wanted to be alone, but Jesus chose to embrace those who were waiting for Him to give them compassion and help them. There are times I have wanted to run away and be by myself, but my family needs me so I continue to draw strength from Him. I have never felt His presence more than at this storm I am going through. It really has stirred a yearning to seek Him and spend more time soaking in His presence. There is so much great inspirational tools in this book I want to share it all with you. What I will do is tell you how much this book has blessed me, encouraged me and helped me cry tears that were healing. I sometimes feel alone in this journey but know God has me just where he want me. It is so true that when you take your eyes off Jesus in the midst of a storm, anxiety, bitterness and anger try to take over our thoughts and mind. I have been guilty of saying, "Why God? Why are you doing this to me?" As I walk through this difficult storm I an leaning more on Him and not asking why as much. I'm trying to get my faith stronger and let Him hold me up. The author writes with clarity and encouragement. This one statement hit me hard, "When you choose fear over faith, and self over sacrifice, the waves of your storm can violently splash upon the people whom love you dearly." We need to look around us and be aware of others who are standing with us. Are we making the right choices? Am I seeking God's advice? Am I allowing loved ones to pray with me or am I shutting them out? As I read this book, I kept thinking about one of my favorite songs, " The Anchor Holds." It is a powerful song about the storms we battle but the anchor holds which is Jesus. I highly recommend this book to everyone facing difficult times. It is a powerful tool to help you as you go through storms. The author includes many scriptures which are helpful and encouraging. I know I will face more storms, but now I feel better equipped to go through them with God standing beside me. I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

God’s timing is always perfect. When I signed up to review “Storm Proof” a few months ago, I was intrigued by the title and figured that it would be an interesting work of nonfiction. What I didn’t realize was how appropriate it would be for this season of my life. All of us travel along rocky paths once in a while, but sometimes there are periods when it seems as though we are in the middle of a gale with a vicious onslaught that seems unrelenting. We love the mountaintop experiences we have with God, and although we do not often choose to also walk through the valleys, it is during those low treks that we learn the most. As we come to cling closer to the Lord, we come to know His lovingkindness and provision more deeply. Indeed, “[t]he compass that will lead you out of the storm is your ability to recount the miracles God has done for you and others in the past. The miraculous God of the land who provides for us in abundance is also the God of the seas who preserves our lives in times of peril.” The truth is, we are jaded. We have become desensitized and far too often can’t see the forest for the trees. There are so many miracles all around us each day that we don’t even acknowledge, let alone the miracles of healing and protection that the Lord grants. God has always been in the miracle business, and He still is! This is one of the points that struck me early on in this book; McLeod posits that when Jesus appeared to His disciples on the Sea of Galilee during a terrible storm, Peter asked if it was Jesus because he knew that if it was, then something even more miraculous was about to happen. We are safe in the Savior’s arms! In keeping with the nautical theme, McLeod shares that her anchors for the storms of life are the Word of God, worship, prayer, and the Holy Spirit. With this combination, there is no storm that can defeat us. God protected Noah and his family during the flood, after which He made a covenant promise to never again destroy all living beings while the earth remains. Noah’s story brought up two tidbits that snagged my attention: God wept over the flood, and he had given the people of the earth 120 years while Noah was building the ark to turn to Him, but they did not and so they perished. We have the same option today, and while we may not be facing a worldwide flood, what is at stake is our eternity. Likewise, McLeod’s section on Job’s story is enlightening. Job teaches us to worship while grieving and while waiting. Worship should always be our response, no matter what our circumstances. If Job, who lived before the redeeming power of Jesus set us free, could worship through his devastation, how much more should we! One of my favorite quotations from this book is that “Satan is still roaming the earth, but he no longer has the same power depicted in the book of Job because Calvary changed everything, for all of eternity. And you, my friend, have been given the authority and power of heaven to defeat him!” I am sorry to say that at times I give the adversary more power than is due him when I should be focusing on the unlimited and all-surpassing power of the Lord of heaven and earth, power that we have access to 24/7! “Storm Proof” is a thought-provoking, engaging read that packs plenty of punch and insight into its 256 pages. If this book had a soundtrack, it would be “Praise You In This Storm” by Casting Crowns. I received a complimentary copy of this book through CelebrateLit. All opinions are my own.

As I picked up the book Storm Proof Weathering Life’s Tough Times by Carol McLeod, I expected to find a book that would make me think and read about how to weather the storms that invariably come with life. I found that and more. The Scripture references provide a clear Biblical basis for what Ms. McLeod writes in her book. She also provides the voice of the first-hand experience of many storms she has had to weather in her lifetime. I think the personal experiences and the Scriptural storms references, Ms. McLeod does an excellent job of providing insights for any storms the reader may be entering, living through or finally seeing the rainbow at the end of the storm. So whether you personally have experienced, are experiencing, or expect to experience storms in your life and you want a Biblical basis for getting through them, check out this book for yourself.
